Abbreviated Lesson Plan Format

Name: Mikaela Brown

Description of student(s) for whom lesson is intended: An eighth-grade class with six
students. The students are very good when it comes to seeing things literally, but struggle seeing
it in a figurative light. The students have mixed skills in ASL. Some of them have a stronger
foundation in ASL whilst others started learning the language more recently. One student is at a Commented [CP1]: Meaning that they had English before
fourth grade reading level and the others are mixed across fifth and sixth grade reading levels. – strong? Weak? Or no language foundation? See how the
answers to these questions will make a difference??

Subject and description of target concept: Social Studies: The Battle of Gettysburg. The Commented [CP2]: Give a description of the target
students are learning of the turning point in the Civil War. concept though. Tell me about the concept and what you
know of it. Not just name it, but tell me about what part of
the huge topic you are going to focus on. What is it that you
know about it? How is the turning point of the war related
to Gettysburg? This section is more of the concept/meaning
Context of lecture (where does your “lecture” fit within the context of a full lesson): The of the lecture within the lesson.
students have already learned of the first part of the Civil War. They know that at this point, the
Confederacy has won most of the battles. They also know who General Lee is and why the Civil
War is being fought. Commented [CP3]: Ok, but again, to answer the question
– where does your lecture fit within the lesson? Beginning,
middle, end? Is it the attention getter? The summary? The
“meat?” This section is more of the structure of the lecture
in the lesson.

Gettysburg was the turning point of the war and a major loss for the Confederacy. Commented [CP5]: What do you mean by “identify?”
What exactly will they do? Put this into a nice, tight
behavioral objective that relates to the goal. Have included
the condition, an observable behavior, and a criterion.

Materials (if any): White board, markers

Assessment of Understanding (how will you know that the students are understanding your
lecture?):
Asking questions during the lecture, checking to see if they are confused. Commented [CP6]: Too vague. What exactly will you
ask? What answers are you looking for? How are you
checking for confusion? Just asking, “Do you understand?”
won’t cut it. They will answer “yes” regardless.
