House Rules

In general:
Communication and emailing

• Lecturers use BlackBoard and student.uva.nl email to communicate with students. Please check
both daily for announcements.
• Do not email your lecturer about administrative issues or information that can be found
elsewhere (i.e. the UvA website or the student administration (room 0.17 Bungehuis)
For other queries, questions etc. which are not answered on the website or by the student
administration, please go and see your lecturer during his/her office hour or make an
appointment with him/her if they do not have a regularly scheduled office hour.
• If you are unable to attend class, refer to the course BlackBoard to find out what has been
covered in class. If necessary, consult your classmates, not the lecturer, about material missed.
• Do not email your lecturer unless you have an urgent issue: start your email with Dear
Professor, Dr, Mr, Mrs, Ms (whatever the case may be) + surname and provide a suitable closing
formula.
• Usually lecturers will answer emails as soon as possible. If you have not received an answer
after 5 working days, it is advisable to send a reminder.

Coursework/assignments

• Please only submit assignments to lecturers if you are asked to do so.


• You will be asked to submit your work through links on BlackBoard and may also be required to
hand in a paper copy.
• You must hand in assignments before the deadline. Any coursework or take-home assignments
submitted after a deadline will not be corrected or graded.

In-class student presentations

• Students who do not show up for their presentation without a valid excuse, will automatically
receive a 1.0 (no separate retake).

Communicating about exams:

• Try to refrain from emailing your lecturer about when your mark will be posted on
BlackBoard/SIS. It will arrive in due time.
• The lecturer will give feedback on your work at specifically reserved hours. The date and time
will be posted on the course BlackBoard. Do not email your lecturer to ask for feedback or to
express your dissatisfaction concerning your grade.
• The aim of the hours reserved for feedback is for you to learn from your mistakes. You are not
invited to negotiate the grade that has been assigned.
In class:
Attendance:

• Your physical and mental presence is expected at every class. The lecturer will take attendance
for every class.
• Students are encouraged to be punctual. If you do arrive late for class, you will be responsible
for finding out what you need to catch up on. You should refer to BlackBoard and, if
necessary, ask a classmate for further information.
• Should you not be able to attend class because of illness, please notify the lecturer by email
before class.

Classroom behaviour:

• Students are allowed to use laptops and other electronic devices during class for note-taking or
referring to digital material related to the subject matter of the class. The use of electronic
devices for any other purpose will be deemed inexcusable and the student will be requested to
leave the class.

Exams:

• You are expected to be on time for exams. Students are not allowed to leave the exam room
during the first 30 minutes of the exam. In addition, should you happen to arrive at the exam
room more than half an hour after it has started, you will not be admitted.
• If you are caught cheating in any way, you will be disqualified. For more information, check the
