B777 (CENTRAL MAINTENANCE COMPUTING SYSTEMS) CMCS

PURPOSE : Receives and stores data from aircraft system for Fault Processing, Testing and Data
Loading

CMCS doesn’t have dedicated computer/LRU, CMCS is part of Aircrcaft Information Monitoring
System (AIMS) using CMCF of CPM/COMM

FDE are conditions related to aircraft safe operation which are indicated to the flight crew and
ground crew on Integrated Display System.

Aircraft Systems connected to AIMS via CPM/COMM are :

1. System ARINC 629

2. Flight control ARINC 629
3. ARINC 429
4. Analogue Signal
5. Discrete Lines

FDE displayed on EICAS,PFD and FD from CPM/GG

Avionic LAN (AVLAN) is a 10-Base T Ethernet System and is part of On Board LAN (OLAN)

Bridge Router (BROUTER) is also known as Service Interface Unit (SIU)

MAT located in the flight compartment in the second observer’s panel /station

PMAT located in the main equipment centre (MEC) on the E4 rack

Spare PMAT (if avail) is connected to the port at: (3 MAT can operate at the same time)

1. Nose landing gear

2. Near main landing gear (release access door)
3. Near tail (behind service access door)
4. IN flight compartment , near MAT

MAT and PMAT used to communicate and access fault data contained in AIMS CMCS via

Bypass Switch : data converter

 Convert 10 Base T signals to 10-Base T fibre optic signals for output of AIMS and vice versa

MAT only communicate with left AIMS while PMAT communicate only with right

Ground Test Switch on overhead maintenance panel enable certain CMCS ground test, data loads
and special functions .It also provide power to PMAT in MEC

Data Load Gateway :

 GATEWAY: Application software that runs a firewall system between two networks, provides
security.
 CMCF Data Load Gateway only operates on ground

Shop Faults :

 combination of LRU maintenance information and failure information that the LRU detects
by BITE.

Generated reports are sent to cockpit printer (connected via ARINC 429 Data Bus, ground station,
MAT and PMAT disc drive

HOW TO OPERATE MAT?

I. Supply electrical power (AC) via External power , APU or IDG

II. If screen black , move the ball (MAT have screensaver)
III. Move the trackball to move the cursor
IV. Push left selection switch to select something

V.
VI.

HOW TO OPERATE PMAT?

I. Supply electrical power (AC)

II. Set the Ground Test Switch on the overhead maintenance panel in the cockpit to enable
III. Push the ON/OFF switch on PMAT to ON, ensure PWR light ON

IV.

HOW TO CONNECT SPARE PMAT TO AIRCRAFT?

I. Connect PMAT cable to a PMAT interface. The cable doesn’t supply power to the PMAT,
must use external power
II. ON switch of PMAT, pwr light comes on

POWER SUPPLY

I. PMAT on MEC is connected to aircraft power. Doesn’t use battery

II. Spare PMAT uses battery which can be
 Replaced
 Recharged (connect AC power to PMAT ,fully charged 1 hr .Battery charger stops when
battery fully charged

HOW TO START CENTRAL MAINTENANCE?

*Can use Ground Support Equipment (GSE) as an alternative to PMAT

I. To start CNS, select ON BOARD MAINTENANCE from initial menu on MAT or PMAT
II. The CMCF main menu has 5 selections :
i. Line Maintenance
ii. Extended Maintenance
iii. Other functions
iv. Help
v. Report

*The menu also shows which CMCF left or right is in control

HOW TO FIND INBOUND FDE?

I. On MAT or PMAT, select ON BOARD MAINTENANCE, then select LINE MAINTENANCE from
CMCS main menu
II. Select INBOUND FLIGHT DECT EFFECT
III. Use scroll bar to select all FDE . Each FDE is labelled as ACTIVE, NOT ACTIVE or LATCHED
IV. Select maintenance message data to show more

*FDE also shows fault code and maintenance message number which we use to find Fault Isolation
procedure in Fault Isolation Manual (FIM)

HOW TO DO GROUND TEST?

3 Types of ground test:

i. Operational test
ii. System test
iii. LRU replacement test

Use MAT ground test selection tables for ground test

i. On MAT or PMAT , select ON BOARD MAINTENANCE from initial menu

ii. Select LINE MAINTENANCE from CMCS menu
iii. Select GROUND TEST from the LINE MAINTENANCE MENU
iv. Refer to the test selection table
v. Select ATA system, type ,test and continue
vi. Do as the test instruction
vii. If READY shows, select START TEST
viii. Ensure PASSED shows after test finished
ix. If FAILED shows, select maintenance message

TO ERASE FAULT HISTORY DATA?

i. Select OBM
ii. Select EXTENDED MAINTENACE, then fault history
iii. Select ATA
iv. Select ERASE by ATA, select ALL FAULT HISTORY
v. Select erase

HOW TO INSTALL SOFTWARE?

i. Can use MAT or PMAT for this procedure, can used both at the same time
ii. Aircraft must be on ground, engine off
iii. Put the disk on the disk drive
iv. On PMAT or MAT select ON BOARD MAINTENANCE
v. Select EXTENDED MAINTENANCE
vi. Select DATA LOAD
vii. Select the “Select Destination”,then select ATA system
viii. Select component in which to install software
ix. Select continue, select start
