Obesity is a major global health epidemic that increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart
disease.
Researches from Flinders University, Australia, are studying a gene related to obesity. RCAN1,
which may allow you to eat as much as you want without gaining weight The study used a huge
genetic screen in rodents to identify obesity-causing genetic candidates. When the gene RCAN1 was
removed, the mice could feed on high fat foods for prolonged periods without gaining weight.
According to project leader and professor Damien Keating, blocking RCAN1 helps transform
energy-
storing white fat into energy-burning brown fat, meaning the body burns calories even while
resting and without the need for dietary restrictions or extra exercise. The international team said
new drug therapies could be developed based on the finding. Inhibiting the gene might also translate
into combating obesity and serious diseases such as diabetes.
“We are currently testing a series of protein-targeting drugs to see if they inhibit RCAN1 and
whether they represent potential new anti-obesity drugs,” Keating said. Two-thirds of Austra!ian
adults and a quarter of children are either overweight or obese, yet left with limited effective
therapeutic treatments. „We have research funding from the National Health and Medical Research
Council. We can potentially make a real difference in the fight again obesity,” Keating added.

The bid to create a global digital museum has been welcomed by scientists, who say it will enable
them to study valuable specimens that are currently hidden in museum drawers. Museums including
London‟s Natural History Museum and the Smithsonian in Washington DC are involved. They have
set out ambitious plans to digitize millions of specimens. Digitally recording 40 millions fossils at the
Smithsonian will take an estimated 50 years. However, five years into the project, the team says it is
bringing dark data into the light for crucial research.
Kathy Holits from the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, who is leading the project there
explained, “We are trying to make our entire collection available digitally for researchers to use
online from anywhere in the world. We‟re pretty sure that this is the largest fossil collection in the
world.”
For the vast majority of the digitization project, museums will capture high quality images and
all of
the key information—age, species, where the specimen was discovered—to make available
online. That alone is valuable—studying digital marine for example, is already enabling researchers
to understand how marine life in changing sea levels and ocean temperatures. However, the most
detailed digital data can actually be better than a real fossil.
Prof Emily Rayfield at the University of Bristol uses CT scans of dinosaur skulls and other bones
to build computer models for research. Prof Rayfield‟s colleague at Bristol University, Prof Philip
Donoghue, uses digital scans of ancient fossilized microorganisms to produce large-scale versions
that reveal far more detail about how they lived. He said that a digital fossil would transform
scientists‟ ability to study life on earth.

Sponges or Porifera are a group of animals that includes about 10,000 living species. Adult
sponges are sessile animals that attach to hard rocky surfaces, shells or submerged objects. The larvae
are ciliated, free swimming creatures. Most sponges inhabit marine environment, but a few species
live in freshwater habitats. There are three subgroups of sponges, the glass sponges, the
demosponges and the calcarious sponges.
Sponges are primitive multicellular animals that have no digestive system, no circulatory system
and no nervous system. They do not have organs and their cells are not organized into well-defined
tissues. The body of a sponge is like a sac that is perforated with lots of small openings or pores.
Sponges are filter feeders. They draw water in through the pores located throughout their body
wall into a central cavity. The Central cavity is lined with collar cells which have a ring of tentacles
that surround a flagellum. Movement of the flagellum creates current that keeps water flowing
through the central cavity and out of a hole at the top of the sponge called the osculum. As water
passes over the collar cells, food is captured by the collar cell‟s ring of tentacles. Once absorbed, food
is digested in food vacuoles or transferred to the amoeboid cells in the middle layer of the body wall
for digestion.

When the full moon occurs during the moon‟s closest approach to Earth, its perigee, it appears
larger and brighter in the sky. This phenomenon is often called a supermoon. A new moon at perigee
is also often referred to as a supermoon. However, this event usually gains less attention because a
new moon is invisible from earth.
The moon‟s orbit around Earth is not a perfect circle, but elliptical, with one side closer to earth
than the other. As a result, the distance between the moon and earth varies throughout the month
and the year. On average, the distance is about 382,900 kilometers (238,000 miles).
The point on the moon‟s orbit closest to Earth is called the perigee and the point farthest away is
the
apogee.
When a full moon occurs when the moon is near its closest approach to earth, it is called a Super
Full Moon. When there is a new moon around the closest point to earth, it is known as a Super New
Moon. A micromoon, on the other hand, is when a full or a new moon is near its farthest point from
earth, around apogee. It‟s also known as a minimoon.
