EARLY ALERT

The Northern Research Station will be recruiting for a Research Forester in Research Work Unit NRS-02, “Sustaining
forests in a changing environment.” The vacancy announcement will be issued in the near future.

ASSIGNMENT: The Unit's mission is to provide basic scientific understanding and science-based management
guidelines to sustain and enhance the functions and values of forest ecosystems in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and beyond. The
successful applicant to this position will work with other scientists in this unit and elsewhere to advance this mission.

DUTIES: The successful applicant for this position will inherit several active long-term studies concerning regeneration
and early stand growth/development of the various forest types common to the Central Appalachian region. Maintenance
of these studies as well as initiation of new studies will occupy approximately 65% of the scientist’s time. Specifically,
the incumbent's research must include studies of at least one of two problem areas: 1) Basic research into the mechanisms
that affect regeneration processes and interspecies competition of tree reproduction; or 2) Applied research of silvicultural
techniques, including fertilization, herbicide application, prescribed fire, direct seeding, or hardwood planting, to increase
the abundance and competitiveness of advance regeneration of desirable species in Central Appalachian forests affected
by previous management, forest health problems, and other factors. Silvicultural knowledge, quantitative skills, science
delivery aptitude, and demonstrated productivity in designing/conducting forestry field research and publishing the results
are essential. The scientist will need to attract external funding for some research.

The successful candidate will become a leader of the SILVAH community, an association of natural resource
professionals united by a systematic approach to sustainably managing the Allegheny hardwood, mixed oak, and northern
hardwood forests of the Central Appalachian region. Therefore, the abilities to work well with others of varying
backgrounds and communicate effectively with practicing foresters are indispensable. Additionally, SILVAH
responsibilities entail leading several week-long silviculture training sessions conducted annually in Pennsylvania and
periodically in Ohio, frequent consultations with users of the SILVAH software program, and working with a computer
specialist to maintain/update the SILVAH programming code. These technology transfer responsibilities as well as other
science delivery opportunities will occupy approximately 35% of the scientist’s time.

LOCATION OPTIONS:
 Irvine, PA is in northwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 60 miles southeast of Lake Erie. The area is largely
rural. Warren, a city of about 9,000 residents, is the county seat and provides the cultural, educational, medical,
and other community services to the area. The cost of living is low; the median cost of a home is estimated at
$88,000; the median rental is $680/month for all rentals. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound, including
mountain biking, adventure sports, cross-country skiing, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, and water sports
associated with the Allegheny National Forest and Allegheny River / Kinzua Reservoir. Forest research is
strongly supported by a wide variety of partners and is conducted locally as well as throughout the state on 5
million acres of public forest land.

 Delaware, OH is in central Ohio, approximately 25 miles north of Columbus. Delaware has a population of
approximately 40,000 residents and is considered part of the Columbus Metropolitan Area (2.1 million residents).
Delaware has a vibrant historic downtown with many good dining/shopping options and is the home of Ohio
Wesleyan University. The research lab is located about 2 hours from the Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest – a
regional hub for research, demonstration, and education – and neighboring public forest land, Wayne National
Forest (241,000 acres) and Ohio state forest land (200,000 acres).

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: The position is permanent full-time. Title: Research Forester (Ph.D. or equivalent
degree in one of the above disciplines). Grade level: GS-11 or 12. Salary: $62,246 – 74,596, depending upon
qualifications and experience. Promotion Potential: This position is a permanent, full-time, career-conditional research
appointment that is classified under the scientist career plan. Therefore, promotion is dependent upon the incumbent's
impact on the research assignment as determined through the United States Office of Personnel Management's Research
Grade Evaluation Guide.
