Universal Design for Learning (UDL): If some students are uncomfortable recording
themselves or themselves cooking/making their food I would allow them to record someone
else in the video while they explain what is happening.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how
you will introduce the SRT activity.
Prior to this activity the students will have had a lesson on nutrition and how to incorporate
healthier food options in their diet. During the nutrition lessons I would have them record the
food they eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Once the lessons are over, I will have them
record themselves 3 times implementing healthier food options in their diet - breakfast, lunch,
dinner. Whether that be eating out or making food at home.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge
☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic)
☐ To illuminate common misconceptions
☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and mastery for
ALL students)
X Summative assessment of content knowledge
☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll
X Discussion starter
X “Homework” collection
☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the activity the students will record themselves making breakfast, lunch, and dinner
for themselves. If they eat out for one of the meals they are to record the meal they have
chosen. The students will explain what foods are in each of their meals. They will say if they
believe if there is a better option they could have chosen. Once the students have recorded
themselves they will post their video clips on the class’s discussion board. The students will
need a smartphone or iPad/tablet to complete this activity. The students have to record
themselves for a minimum of 15 seconds per video or until they’ve answered all of the
questions.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☐ Multiple choice
☐ Multiple select
☐ True/False
☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank
X Longer open-ended response
☐ Other:

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them
below (8-10 questions required):
What ingredients are in your meal?
Approximately how many calories are you intaking?
How many calories are you burning a day?
Are you intaking the recommended 2000 calories per day?
What food groups are you covering with the meal you are eating?
If you’re missing a food group, which one(s)?
How can you try and incorporate this food group into your meal next time?
What’s your favorite meal of the day?

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☐ Yes
X No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the
questions and display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
X No
Why or why not?
When creating a food log there is not necessarily a right or wrong answer. I would give
feedback to the student’s that would say, “You had a great portioned meal, but next time try
and replace your soda with a water or sugar-free juice.”

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

The student’s participation of the activity will be their grade. I would allow students to present
some of their recordings to show students some of the meals/snacks they ate during this time
period.

How will the data be used?

This activity would be a summative grade at the end of a health and nutrition unit. This would
allow me to see if the students are able to incorporate what they’ve learned in class into their
real lives at home. If the students want to share their videos with their parents, I would have
no problem with that. It may motivate the students to do better on the activity. If the students
want to share their videos with their classmates they will be allowed to.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I am allowing my students to have free responses. They are able to choose what they want
to eat but they do have guidelines. I hope to see how the students respond to having free
range questions. I hope this increases student learning because they are able to explore
different options.

Reflective Practice:
I feel like this activity increases student learning because they are having to apply what
they’ve learned in class to their real lives. The students are exploring different ways of
incorporating healthier food options into their daily lives.
