What is a video game?

Video games are electronic games that involve

interaction with the user interface to produce visual feedback on video devices such
as TV screens or computer monitors. Video words in video games traditionally refer
to raster display devices, but in the 2000s it shows any type of display device that
can produce two or three-dimensional images. Video games can also attract
students' attention easily. Hence, many schools have used video games as a tool to
teach today. The issue is, is this the right way to teach students? Does it have a
good effect or more on adverse effects on students? Of all the sources I have found,
there are many adverse and critical effects that can be harmful to students if the
school uses video games as a teaching tool. Therefore, it is better not to use video
games as a teaching tool as it brings many adverse effects to the students. For
example such as it makes students obsessed and addicted to playing video games,
decrease their academic performance, making them losing well-mannered and moral
values, and causing them to be exposed to health problems.

First of all, the reason why schools cannot use video games as a teaching tool
is that students will be obsessed and addicted to playing video games in the
classroom. Someone who is obsessed with playing video games cannot control the
amount of time they spend on computers. He will play video games with intentions to
spend just 20 minutes of games but will spend a few hours pass. However, the
research has found that the benefits of using video games as a teaching tool can
make them not bored when learning. Yes, that is true because video games have
proven that it can attract teenage attention. But do you know? Video games can
make them not bored while learning because it can attract them and at the same
time, this will cause them to unable to focus when teachers are teaching in the
classroom. We all know that all teachers need to teach and give school work to
produce smart, brilliant and intelligent students, while students should concentrate
and not just rely on video games. If a teacher uses video games as a teaching tool,
then they are definitely addicted to the game and cannot focus in the classroom. If
the teacher prohibits them from playing video games, they might not be able to listen
to the instructions and possibly play the game in secret when the teacher is teaching.
This will lead to the ineffective teaching in that classroom. Therefore, if teachers use
video games as a teaching tool, they will only spend more time playing in video
games than spending time on their lessons.
The next reason is that video games will decrease their academic
performance. Playing long hours of video games can affect their performance in
school. If they spend more than two hours of gaming, then they might have trouble
falling asleep and paying attention in school. Video game addicts also skip their
homework to play games, leading to a downfall in their grades. While the benefits of
video games saying that it can help them learn better and easier in their lessons. But
the things that we need to know is that video games only help them in a particular
subject like learning in algebra and education. This is a fact because certain video
games can make them easier to understand when they learn algebra and education.
Examples of video games that help them learn algebra are NumerAmigos and
Simcity, while learn education is Civilization III. As I said earlier, video games can
help them in certain subjects such as algebra and education but we all know that
video games can cause them to perform badly in academic if they already addicted
to video games. We all also know that video games can easily influence students to
obsessed with video games. So, it is not a good thing if students become passive
and show a bad performance in their academic. In other words, we should not use a
video game as a teaching tool in school just to make them learn easier in algebra.
Because the important thing is, teachers should make students involve, perform well
and taking part with actively in the class.

Other than that, use video games as a teaching tool can make students to
losing their well-mannered and moral values. This is because they will pick up bad
language and curse while playing video games especially when they lose the game.
On the other side, they said that video games can make students smarter because
they can easily understand if using a video game to study. Yes, it is true that video
games can make students smarter because most of the scientists have investigated
that gaming can increase brain function, problem-solving skills, and their memory.
But after all of this, they still do not learn moral values and good behavioural
constructs from video games as video games mostly have elements of violence and
sex. So, what I am trying to say is what use of video games if it can make students
smarter but it also makes them losing their moral attitude? We all know that moral
values are extremely important for students’ well-being because it provides a
structure for their life. So, as moral values very important, we cannot use it as a
teaching tool and ignore this issue just because we want them to learn easily in
certain subjects. Besides using video games as a teaching tool, we can replace it
with outdoor activities to improve their brain function, problem-solving skills, and
memory. If old days teacher can teach and produce smart and intelligent student
without using video games, so why should teachers nowadays use a video game as
a teaching tool?

Last but not least why schools should not use video games as a teaching tool
is because it causing them to be exposed to health problems. Video games can
negatively impact their health if they skip meals, lose sleep and spend all of their free
time to playing video games. Besides, students who spend more than two hours a
day in video games in life and not participating in physical activity may suffer from
childhood obesity. In addition, researchers have found that the addiction to playing
video can lead to such medical issues as backaches, headaches, and numbness
that they may feel in their wrists, hands, shoulders, and elbows. On the other hand,
the benefit of video games is that it can make students happy and relieve stress. Of
course this true because video games can have positive, therapeutic effects on
players of all ages, especially those with mental or emotional problems such as
students when they have so many homework. It also can make their mind time to
rest and relax. Relaxation reduces the risk of heart problems and stroke, boosts
memory, buffers against depression, and helps decision-making. But the important
thing that we need to know is, by playing video games is not a good way to gain
happiness and relieve stress. There are many other ways to gain happiness and
relieve stress such as taking part in sport, jogging, listening to music and spend time
with family. Why I said by playing video games not a good way is because it can
make students busy for the whole day especially who are video game addict’s and it
can cause them to ignoring their family when they busy playing video games.
Therefore, schools should not use video games as a teaching tool as it can make
them ignoring people around them.

The conclusion is, although there are many benefits when we use video
games as a teaching tool, there are always bad effects on those benefits. Examples
of the bad effects that I have mentioned are video games will make students
obsessed and addicted to playing video games, decrease their academic
performance, making them losing well-mannered and moral values, and causing
them to be exposed to health problems. All of these are very critical issues that we
cannot ignore these issues as it can lead to bigger problems later on. Therefore, we
cannot use video games as a teaching tool as it brings too many bad effects on our
students.
