Why measure HV using spark gaps Clearance around the spheres

• Simple sphere spark gaps insulated by atmospheric

air have fairly stable flashover voltage;
• Can be used to measure the amplitude of a voltage
above about 10 kV;
• The flashover voltage is affected by the geometry of
a spark gap, size of spheres and air density;
• Sphere gaps can be used in the protection of testing
samples during HV tests;
• The limitation in gap distance provides a fairly
homogeneous field distribution.
