Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Let’s Talk About Weather!

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th
Content Standard Addressed: S4E4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to predict weather
events and infer weather patterns using weather charts/maps and collected weather data.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): Kahoot.it

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will have their own device to participate with. The game is colorful and has fun music.
Representation: Students can create their name when they enter the game. Teachers can remove the player if
their name is inappropriate.
Action/Expression: Students are allowed to sit closer to the board. They can chat between questions and
move around a little bit.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The SRT will be incorporated at the beginning of a review day. It will be the day before the science test. The
Kahoot! Will review the content learned throughout the unit.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will each have an iPad to connect to the Kahoot! and respond to questions. The teacher will begin
the Kahoot! from their computer. They will help students get connected and create appropriate usernames.
The teacher will begin the Kahoot! once all students are connected. The teacher will read each question and
its answers aloud. Once the answer results pop up, the teacher will prompt students to repeat the correct

answer and have someone explain why it is the correct answer. The teacher will take notes of which
questions were missed by more than half of the students. This information will be applied to the review after
the Kahoot!. The activity will last about twenty minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some or all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
It is essential to recognize the learning opportunities present in misconception. Kahoot! makes it

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

The teacher will take notes on the ratio of correct and incorrect answers for each question. It will inform the
teacher of what they need to review with the students after the Kahoot!.

How will the data be used?

Data collected will determine which concepts will be reviewed during the review session after the Kahoot!.
Students’ responses will not be collected for a grade. It will not be given to students or parents to monitor
progress because students earn more points for answering faster. This is not a fair way to assess students. A
student that reads slower and knows the answer can get less points for someone that guessed the answer as
soon as the question came up.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I would like to try an assessment similar to a practice test to determine what content will be reviewed in the
review session. I think this is an effective way of preparing students for a summative assessment.

Reflective Practice:
I think this could have an incredibly positive impact on student learning. Because there is a form of
competition, students will be focused, engaged, and taking the quiz seriously. Common misconceptions can
be seen by the teacher and the students. Using data from the Kahoot! to determine material for the review
will create a better review for students because it is centered around the information that most students did
not retain.
