Time/Period: 15 minutes Materials: Song, Video, Piano

Standards:

ART.M.I.K.1
Demonstrate uses of the voice, proper instrumental technique, and steady beat.
ART.M.I.K.4
Sing melodies with confidence in a large group.

Objectives (I can statements):

Students will be able to find the beat and rhythm of a piece of music and they will be able to sing the melodies with
confidence in a large group.
Assessment (Formative, Summative):
Formative: For the assessment, we will observe their rhythm/beat clapping to make sure everybody is together as well as making
sure the student repeat what is sung to them.

Introduction/Hook/Anticipatory Set/Activating Prior Knowledge: (Warm-up, review of previous day’s lesson, check for
understanding of previous knowledge, questions you will ask)
To start class we will tell the students that they will be learning how to sing a song! We will then introduce the song by
having them look at it while we play it for them through the youtube video.

Steps in the lesson:

I Do: First, we will Introduce what a beat is and find the beat of the song. Once we have done that, we will clap the
beat of the song while saying the lyrics. We will do the same steps with finding and clapping the rhythm. We will then
demonstrate the call and response method of the song by having three of us do the leader part and 3 do the group
part.

We Do: We will then ask the students to Clap the beat with us and then clap the rhythm with us. We will then split the
class in half and half of them will sing the leader part with the one group of 3 teachers while the other group will sing
the group part with the other 3 teachers.

You Do: After the students feel confident, we will have the students clap the beat and rhythm and sing the song (in
their groups above) without teacher assistance.

Closure/Wrap up: This may be in the form of independent practice, a chance to share, or explicit restatement of the goals of the lesson.

The closure will be the students singing the song without teacher assistance, and we will then congratulate them on
completing their goal of learning how to sing a song.
Extension Activities:
Some extension activities include; having students come up with actions to each verse, singing a verse with a small
group or drawing a picture of how the song makes them feel.

Accommodation /Modification:
Specific Student/Group:
We will modify this lesson based on the needs of certain individuals. Students who have a hearing impairment will be
able to follow along with the video and those who have a vision impairment will be able to follow along with the help
of a paraprofessional. Students with learning disabilities will be placed near a more advanced student who can guide
them.

Differentiation:

What will I differentiate? Content Process Product Environment

Explain:
We will differentiate the process by which we teach the song based upon how quickly the class typically grasps a song.
We will also differentiate by breaking the students up into small groups.

How will I differentiate? For readiness By interest Learning profiles Ability level Affect
Explain:
We will differentiate for ability level by pairing more advanced students with less advanced ones so that the whole
group benefits. We will also include individualized assessment before and after in order to measure each students’
ability and progress.
Diversity:
We will accommodate for diversity by incorporating music from many different origins and speak briefly on the
meaning of each song.
Technology:
We will use YouTube videos as a visual aid.
