the children to modify and change the

Think about how you would ,

How might facilitative leadership be worked How will your leadership development be

how children grow and learn?
Quick review
- a real-world opportunity for extra learning
- when a teacher uses the emerging interests,
questions, and skills of the children to modify and change the original
lesson plan
- involves acting only in ways that improve other’s
performance, focused on providing children with the means, resources,
and authority to be active participants in the teaching and learning
process while understanding the role teacher’s have as learners and
the children’s role as teachers
- the process by which we increase our ability to
create and influence change, growth, and achievement
Leadership Activity
Setting: It’s Morning Circle Time! You have
all of the students gathered—time
to discuss the day of the week,
date of the month, and chart our
current weather. The children love
talking about the weather!

Today is Monday, September 17, 2018

and outside is partly cloudy, which
prompts several children to start talking
at once about their own weather
predictions for the week.

Leadership Activity
After quieting down the class and reminding them to raise their hand to speak, you call on 3
students to discuss their weather predictions…

These are the student’s predictions about the weather:

Conner: “My grandpa said that this week we are going to have a huge storm called a hurricane.
So there will be a lot of rain this week and I’m excited about getting to play in all the
puddles!”

Bobby: “My cousin Elizabeth lives in Texas and when they had a hurricane, it washed away her
house and all her toys… I really like my house. And I just got new bunk beds for my
brother & me… What if I am in my house when the hurricane comes to wash away MY
house?”

Ava: “My mommy is out of town this week, she usually sings to me when a storm gets scary.
Daddy doesn't know any songs. I need my mom home if a storm is coming.”

The comfortable routine of Circle Time and the Weather
chart has now shifted with the concerns of the students.
It’s your job as the Teacher to change and add to the
weather lesson using this teachable moment and turning it
into emergent curriculum.

In groups of two or three, pick one of the student’s

responses and come up with some ways you would
incorporate emergent curriculum into your weather lesson to
address the concerns and questions your students will have.
Be ready to share your ideas and strategies.
