Murder!!

Detective:
I was called about a possible homicide on June 6th around 11:30 pm. I was told of a possible
homicide on June 6th around 10:37 pm with multiple stab wounds. On the early morning of June
7th, around 12:02 am, I set out to the Washington Parking garage on 17th street and headed up
to the 6th level of the parking garage where the possible homicide occurred. Through my initial
observations with a body which at the time was identified as male, around 6’, brown hair, and
who had multiple stab wounds to the back of the head and one through the stomach region. I
also noticed that the victim fell on his back which indicated to me that initially he was attacked
from behind and then turned to fight back but ultimately lost the battle. A stream of blood can
be seen leaving the scene and traveling about 25 feet where it abruptly stops. The blood is
being tested to find out whether it belongs to the suspect or the victim. On the scene I found no
weapon however boot prints were found which match size 12 work boots, possibly
Timberlands. In conclusion, the suspect attacked the victim from behind and left the scene via
car immediately after. No DNA was found on the scene, but the lab could prove otherwise. No
motive was present however the death was caused via stab wounds to both the back of the
head and the stomach.

How does it begin? Where does it end?

- The report begins with describing the scene and what was observed based on initial
arrival of the scene. It also begins with the detective finding out about the case. It ends
with major conclusions about the suspect and about the crime committed
What types of details did you find yourself adding? Why? What details did you omit? Why?
- I found myself adding details such as what was on the scene and what the
suspect/victim was impacted by when the crime was committed. I omitted the name of
the victim because without the name it becomes less personal and I decided to allow
the lab to attach a name to the victim.
What kind of words did you choose?
- I chose very descriptive words because it helped describe the scene and the reader
understand what I had seen upon arrival of the scene.
What tone did you take?
- The tone is very informative and is simply to understand what happened on the scene
along with informing the audience of what happened.
How did you order your information?
- I ordered the information in chronological order based on what I observed first to last in
the investigation.
How did you know how to write like a detective would in the first place?
- I was in mock trial in high school, so I learned how to read and understand reports
written by experts and by detectives. I also watch tv shows which include police reports.
Coroner:
Upon initial examination the victim is male, around 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. He is a white
Caucasian with brown hair and a single evergreen tree tattoo on the base of his wrist. The male
appears to be in good physical shape aside from the 3 stab wounds on the body. One wound
can be found on the right side of the back of the head just missing the occipital lobe. The
second wound is on the left back side of the head which indicates the victim was turning while
the stab was taking place. The third and final stab wound is place in the front of the victim
puncturing his left lung and then moved up to cut through the heart. Upon further investigation
of the stab wounds, the weapon appears to be a carving knife which is the reason behind the
slice in the front which cut open the heart.

Eulogy:
On the day of June 6th, 2010, Mark Smith had just finished a double shift at Auntie Anne’s
pretzel shop in the mall. As he walked to his car he was brutally attacked, and he was
pronounced dead when he was found later that night. This news came to a huge surprise
because when he wasn’t at work providing for his 3 kids and wife you could find him at the
animal shelter helping feed and take care of dogs and cats. He always cared about everyone
else over himself and he always said that if he was gone, we needed to live in his memory. Now
we have to go in to the world and live just as Mark would have wanted. We need to carry on his
memory for generations to come. We love you Mark!

Lawyer:
May it please the court, opposing council, and ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I am Jordan
Sazama and I am here to represent Mark Smith in todays case. As you heard in trial today Mr.
Smith was brutally attacked and killed by a certain suspect who had approached Smith from
behind and stabbed him with a knife three separate times. As seen in trial today that person
who killed Mark was his employee Trevor Williams. As you heard in trial Trevor left the pretzel
shop 30 minutes prior to Mark leaving and he waited in his car until Mark was walking to his
car. Williams had not received the pay raise he desperately needed and set out to kill his boss.
As seen in trial, the security cameras locate Williams entering his car and waiting until Smith
approached his car. Then with a hood over his face, Williams approached Smith from behind
and stabbed him in the back of the head. As Smith fell on his back Williams made sure the get in
the face of Smith and rub it in. Today we cannot let Williams rub it in by getting away with
murder. You the jury need to find Trevor Williams guilty of first degree intentional homicide
and make sure that Mark Smith receives justice.
