get so close to the barriers you rub the logos off the tyres.
One of the advantages of watching Formula 1 in the modern
era is that crystal-clear, high-definition broadcasts reveal this
to be more than swaggering bravado. Time and again, beautiful
slow-motion camera work shows drivers on the absolute limit,
clipping the barriers on entry and exit. Daniel admits that,
he’s not above casting a glance at his Pirellis when jumping
out of the cockpit, just to see if he’s worn the sidewalls smooth.
“Sometimes you have to! It makes me laugh," he grins.
"Again, it’s a confidence thing. If I do kiss the walls, I smile. I mean
I really, really smile because it’s incredibly exciting. I suspect other
drivers might chastise themselves, and maybe I should be thinking
‘oops’, rather than laughing – but I can’t. It’s like you’re a kid again,
getting away with something you shouldn’t be getting away with.
It’s that feeling of playing with fire.”

compete with the world’s biggest sports and leagues.
Coming into the 2018 season, Bratches shows no

I’m a huge Formula 1 fan – like a crazy F1 fan – and

W hen did the idea of wanting to design a road car first come to you?
Obviously my career has been in motor racing since I graduated.
But my dad was a great car enthusiast and he used to tinker around
with Lotus Elans and E-Types and so on. I’ve always been interested
in and enjoyed road cars, so it has been a background ambition
through my career to at some point have a go at designing one.
The Valkyrie began as an evening and weekend hobby almost,
but I started thinking about it a bit more seriously in the summer
of 2014 when I was on holiday. The first thing you think is ‘Okay,
what’s the angle, what should it be?’ and with my background
it seemed sensible to make it a high-performance sports car.
Then you have to decide what you want the car to achieve.
The obvious target was a car that if you took it on track it would be
capable of very quick lap times – significantly quicker than any other
road-legal car. But at the same time it would be a comfortable car,
one that if you’re driving on the road it’s not a horrible place to be.
I also wanted it to be something that you could look at as
hopefully a piece of art and I wanted it to be like a modern
superbike where, unless you’re completely stupid, there’s a
slight air of trepidation before you get on it, because you need
to have your wits about you when you ride it. I wanted it to be
something that would make your heart race.

Until a Formula 1 team has a good understanding of how The tyre supplier would like to have a gap of around

they’re the interface between car and road – and all the compounds. China was the first example, where the
horsepower or downforce in the world is useless without a medium, soft and ultrasoft compounds were on offer,
way to properly apply it. For a driver, figuring out the tyres skipping the supersoft.
is half the battle.
“With these Pirelli tyres, even a few degrees too hot or
too cold makes a massive difference to the performance,”
says Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson. “You need to work really,
really hard with your tyre guys to make sure you know
exactly where the optimum is for the different compounds
– or you’re nowhere.”
There are seven different dry compounds (aka ‘slicks’)
available this year, of which Pirelli bring three to each
race. The first consideration for F1’s tyre supplier is
picking compounds to make a two-stop race the most
straightforward strategy. But there is finesse beyond that:
tempting teams with as much strategic range as possible.
“Our target is not only to select the tyres that makes a
two-stopper the quickest, but also the combination that
gives us the highest number of strategies within a certain
interval,” says Mario Isola, Pirelli’s Head of Car Racing.

“We take the best strategy and then see how many others
are within five seconds. There might be two or three
different combinations of tyres that we could bring to a
race, all of which will make a two-stop race likely – but

another offers six, we take the one with the higher number, MARIO ISOLA

Faster, more furious, more
muscular – F2’s new car will
test the stars of tomorrow
and power the champions
of the future to glory
Twelve months ago, F1 was full of excitement for a new
car that would provide a greater challenge for the drivers.
More downforce and more grip would lead to faster, more
spectacular cars. Now it’s Formula 2’s turn to follow suit.
The feeder series, which opened its 2018 campaign
in Bahrain and which will resume in two weeks’ time in
Azerbaijan, has been the perfect breeding ground for
future champions thanks to its status as a support event
at many F1 events and its similar use of Pirelli tyres. In
2018, it moves itself closer to F1 courtesy of a number of
changes to the chassis and a brand-new engine.
Starting with the new engine, Formula 2 has followed
STAR
F1’s lead in dropping V8 for V6 turbo power, with the
junior championship introducing a 3.4-litre Mechacrome
engine that is capable of producing 620bhp at 8750rpm.

DHL FASTEST PIT
STOP AWARD
It happens in the blink of an eye, but the two seconds it takes to execute a
perfect pit-stop can make the difference between triumph and heartbreak. The
DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award was established in 2015 to recognise the feats of
choreographed mechanical wizardry performed by F1’s pit crews at every race.
Last year’s overall winner was Mercedes, with 472 points from 20 races, while
the fastest single stop was performed by Williams, which got Felipe Massa away
at the British Grand Prix in a lightning-quick 2.02 seconds.
