F1's US voyage has always been peripatetic,

but in 1976 it began an eight-season love
affair on the streets of Long Beach. In 1978,
in his rookie season, Gilles Villeneuve led
for 38 laps before crashing. He wouldn't
make the same mistake in '79, taking pole
and leading every lap to claim the third win
of his career.

F1's newest street layout, the Baku City

as one of the sport's most challenging,
as Force India's Sergio Pérez found out in

out at Turn 8 in the castle section.

Barcelona's Montjuïc Park hosted four GPs

between 1969 and 1975 and always trod
a thin line between drama and danger. In
'75 it crossed the boundary, and following
a crash that claimed four lives, the track
was not used again. Here, in 1971, Chris

WORDS: MATT YOUSON

Unforgiving, unrelenting and

T
unpredictable, Formula 1’s street
circuits separate the real racers
from the sport’s lesser lights. Here,
Daniel Ricciardo, the current king of
the Baku City Circuit, explains why
attack is the key to victory at
F1’s newest urban layout – but
only for the brave.

HTER
DRIVEN DANIEL RICCIARDO

Whenever F1 races at a street circuit, the

opinion of Daniel Ricciardo is always sought.
The Red Bull Racing driver is the sport’s chief
cheerleader for temporary tracks. It's somewhat
at odds with his reputation as a driver who lives
to overtake. After all, there's far more opportunity
for a move at a permanent facility than in the tight
confines of a city centre street. The Australian
is aware of the contradiction but, with trademark
grin, puts it down to a split personality.

“It’s the difference between the racer and the driver," ;#.(<62<.#;#;& "%*=!( #;- " #;!

DANIEL RICCIARDO DRIVEN

He has good reason to be confident: whatever else happens in

his career, Daniel Ricciardo’s reputation as an elite street fighter
is secure: he’s been on the podium in each of the last four races
in Singapore, and three times in Monaco. His one and only pole
position came in the Principality – a 2016 race he would likely
have won but for a calamitous pit stop that cost him the race lead.
Finally, he won last year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, coolly keeping
his head while all about were losing theirs to scythe through the
field from 17th place after being forced into an early pit stop to
clear radiators and brake ducts filled with other driver's mistakes.
It's not the sort of performance that's supposed to be possible
within the narrow confines of a street circuit – but Ricciardo
argues that the Baku City Circuit is different to other temporary
tracks in that the layout is capable of satisfying the demands of
both driver and racer.
“At Monaco or Singapore there really aren’t many opportunities
to overtake but Baku is different. You can pass in Baku. There are
a couple of good opportunities on every lap – if you’re brave.
"The biggest challenge in Baku is braking," he adds. "There are
so many braking points around the lap where you have to fully
commit and brake as late as you can – but there’s no room for
error. Once you’re committed, if you lock a wheel, that’s it, you’re
in the wall. The DRS straight into Turn Three is a great example
of that: we’re absolutely honking down there and you can see the
wall coming, coming, coming. Every instinct is screaming 'brake!'
You really need a lot of confidence to leave it late.

that says the only way to be fast around a street circuit is to
& ' )05*5)#
get so close to the barriers you rub the logos off the tyres.
One of the advantages of watching Formula 1 in the modern
era is that crystal-clear, high-definition broadcasts reveal this
to be more than swaggering bravado. Time and again, beautiful
slow-motion camera work shows drivers on the absolute limit,
clipping the barriers on entry and exit. Daniel admits that,
he’s not above casting a glance at his Pirellis when jumping
out of the cockpit, just to see if he’s worn the sidewalls smooth.
“Sometimes you have to! It makes me laugh," he grins.
"Again, it’s a confidence thing. If I do kiss the walls, I smile. I mean
I really, really smile because it’s incredibly exciting. I suspect other
drivers might chastise themselves, and maybe I should be thinking
‘oops’, rather than laughing – but I can’t. It’s like you’re a kid again,
getting away with something you shouldn’t be getting away with.
It’s that feeling of playing with fire.”

F1 launched a series of developments last year,

such as the pre-show at the US GP. There was some
resistance from fans who felt it was not in keeping
with F1’s spirit. How do you reflect on that now?
Generally speaking, we had a very positive reaction
to the festivities that launched the race in Austin.
We are looking to bring new energy and ideas to the
entertainment side of races, to match the excitement
on track, as well as elevate the drivers’ brands to fans.
The minutes before a race start, with the national anthem,
the teams poised to spring into action, the drivers focused
on the battle ahead… all this is a great spectacle for fans
at the circuit and the millions watching on TV and online.
It’s a great opportunity to find ways of further engaging
fans and to elevate the level of pre-race excitement.
[US ring announcer] Michael Buffer worked well for
the US Grand Prix, as did Usain Bolt, but of course one size
does not fit all. We are a global sport, with 21 touchpoints
around the world. Whenever possible and suitable, we will
add some local flavour and a sprinkle of stardust to the
pre-race entertainment.

DRIVEN FAN FORMULA

A perennial source of fascination is the shape of

the Formula 1 calendar. Everyone in F1 has an
appetite for racing in the US and Austin is already
a well-loved location. Realistically, how soon will
it be before we have a second American race?
Austin is the American Grand Prix and we love racing
there, the fans love us racing there. That said, we
are in accuracy-over-speed mode with regard to
new grands prix, whether in the United States or in
other locations around the globe. We are intent on
bringing races to iconic cities and circuits that are
additive to the F1 brand and experience.

There are so many stories about potential venues

that we could fill 52 weeks with 52 locations.
Give us a hot or cold on the following: Vietnam,
Denmark, the Netherlands, Argentina…
These are all world-class cities and countries and
it would be a privilege for us to race in any or all
of them. We have a thoughtful process that we
undertake as it relates to future locations, and that
includes the impact on the current race calendar
and the apportionment of grands prix integrating
into that. We are the only true global sport, racing
this year in 21 countries across four continents
and a balanced race schedule around the world is
important to our mission.

Along the way, Tyler developed an abiding passion
for motor sport and in particular for the sport’s ultimate
expression, Formula 1. For someone based on the US’s
west coast it was truly a labour of love, with Tyler rising
at ungodly hours to follow qualifying and the races.
So, despite being a global star in the world of film
music, when the opportunity came up to work with the
London Philharmonic Orchestra and score a new theme
tune to Formula 1, Tyler jumped at the chance to marry
passion and profession, tweeting: “What an honour
to be chosen to compose the Formula 1 theme! This a
lifelong dream come true as I am a massive #formula1
fan. Thank you #F1!”
A day later he took to Twitter again, posting a picture
of himself directing the full orchestra at London’s AIR
Studios. We caught up with Tyler during the sessions at
the state-of-the-art studio to talk music, motor racing
and the process of composing for the world’s fastest-
moving sport.

W hen did the idea of wanting to design a road car first come to you?
Obviously my career has been in motor racing since I graduated.
But my dad was a great car enthusiast and he used to tinker around
with Lotus Elans and E-Types and so on. I’ve always been interested
in and enjoyed road cars, so it has been a background ambition
through my career to at some point have a go at designing one.
The Valkyrie began as an evening and weekend hobby almost,
but I started thinking about it a bit more seriously in the summer
of 2014 when I was on holiday. The first thing you think is ‘Okay,
what’s the angle, what should it be?’ and with my background
it seemed sensible to make it a high-performance sports car.
Then you have to decide what you want the car to achieve.
The obvious target was a car that if you took it on track it would be
capable of very quick lap times – significantly quicker than any other
road-legal car. But at the same time it would be a comfortable car,
one that if you’re driving on the road it’s not a horrible place to be.
I also wanted it to be something that you could look at as
hopefully a piece of art and I wanted it to be like a modern
superbike where, unless you’re completely stupid, there’s a
slight air of trepidation before you get on it, because you need
to have your wits about you when you ride it. I wanted it to be
something that would make your heart race.

Once you were sure you wanted to proceed with the

project, how did you go about getting it from holiday
daydream to drawing board and production?
When I got back to the UK I started to do some very
early layout drawings, beginning with the seating
position and the broad mechanical layout. To suit the
aerodynamics I wanted to keep the chassis as narrow
as possible, so the first thing was the seating position –
raised legs and feet, just as we do on a race car.
I thought about the engine quite a lot and from a
technical point of view there seemed to be two possibilities.
One was to go for a turbocharged V6, the other a normally-
aspirated V12. Looking at it from a purely technical
standpoint there wasn’t a lot of difference, but with the
V12 I was more confident that we could mount it solidly,
without vibration being an issue. And as soon as you have
to go to a rubber-mounted engine, then that means the
engine and gearbox are non-structural. You need to have
this big framework around it and that gets heavy and
clumsy. Plus a turbocharged engine needs intercoolers.
And I also felt that the V12, being a smoother engine,
would allow us to do some tricks with the gearbox that
we wouldn’t be able to do as easily with a V6, and that
would actually make for a much lighter gearbox.
Also, from an emotional point of view and with regard
to noise, then of course the V12 has some advantages!

You were doing all this in isolation, so when did it become a

wider project?
With Red Bull Racing we assembled a small team consisting of
a mechanical design engineer, Ben Butler, simulation engineer
Giles Wood, a CFD engineer and two surface designers. From
there we were able to start doing some performance simulations
and it appeared to achieve its targets in the simulation world.
We did that for nine months and the following summer it
was a question of ‘How do we take it forwards?’ There were
two choices: you either go with a private investor and we
had somebody lined up as a possibility, or go with an OEM, a
manufacturer. Christian [Horner, Red Bull Racing team principal]
and I felt that for various reasons the OEM route was better,
simply because of the experience it would have in the automotive
sector with dealerships and warranties etc, and knowledge of the
legal side would be useful.
Then it was a simple choice to approach Aston Martin. It’s RED BULL F1 DRIVER DANIEL RICCIARDO
HELPED LAUNCH THE VALKYRIE, WHILE
a British brand, it’s geographically just 30 miles or so down (ABOVE RIGHT) THE TRACK-ONLY PRO
the road from our factory, and we knew some of the Aston VERSION WAS LAUNCHED AT THE RECENT
GENEVA MOTOR SHOW.
personnel – in particular Andy Palmer – from our previous Infiniti
relationship. So there was a natural synergy. It’s been a very
good choice.
There have been cultural clashes, as you might expect,
because as an F1 team we’re used to doing things quickly. We
take quite large amounts of risk and don’t concern ourselves
too much about what it costs to make something, whereas it’s
almost the opposite in the automotive world. But we’re learning
from each other.

You talk about it being a hypercar that is comfortable

in traffic. Can you really do the supermarket run in it?
For the kind of low-speed tractability and comfort you
need if you’re stuck in traffic, then the downside of any
high-revving, highly-tuned engine is that its low-speed
tractability might be poor. We therefore put an electric
motor in for low-speed work, which obviously boosts
the power as well, and performs various other functions.
Also, if you have an electric motor you don’t need a starter
motor, you don’t need an alternator. You don’t need a
reverse gear; you can reverse using the e-motor. Those
elements went a long way to cancelling out the weight of
the electric motor, because we could leave other bits off.

What about the Pro version, the track-only car that

was launched at the Geneva Motor Show last month?
The 002 has the same mechanical underpinnings in
terms of chassis, engine and suspension, but with anything
needed for road legislation or road comfort taken away
– such as a lot of the emission stuff, which is one of the
reasons that cars have got so heavy. Because ride is less
of a consideration you can go stiffer on the suspension,
which means it can take even higher area loads, so more
downforce. Basically it’s about taking away the limitations
of making a comfortable road car. If you take those away
the 002 is what you’re left with.

horsepower or downforce in the world is useless without a medium, soft and ultrasoft compounds were on offer,

is half the battle.
“With these Pirelli tyres, even a few degrees too hot or
too cold makes a massive difference to the performance,”
says Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson. “You need to work really,
really hard with your tyre guys to make sure you know
exactly where the optimum is for the different compounds
– or you’re nowhere.”
There are seven different dry compounds (aka ‘slicks’)
available this year, of which Pirelli bring three to each
race. The first consideration for F1’s tyre supplier is
picking compounds to make a two-stop race the most
straightforward strategy. But there is finesse beyond that:
tempting teams with as much strategic range as possible.
“Our target is not only to select the tyres that makes a
two-stopper the quickest, but also the combination that
gives us the highest number of strategies within a certain
interval,” says Mario Isola, Pirelli’s Head of Car Racing.

“We take the best strategy and then see how many others
are within five seconds. There might be two or three
different combinations of tyres that we could bring to a
race, all of which will make a two-stop race likely – but
if one combination offers three potential strategies, and
another offers six, we take the one with the higher number, MARIO ISOLA

DEBRIEF RANGE FINDERS

The out lap adds the last few degrees of temperature,

but most of the work is done beforehand by the electric
blankets the teams use, which can heat the tyres up to
110°C. There’s delicacy in the process: teams try to not
‘cook’ the tyres by adding too much heat, too quickly,
rather they heat the tyres in stages, with a gentle
warming followed by a more aggressive boost. The
process is staggered according to the race engineers’ pre-
determined schedule. Thus, the first set to be used in Q1
will be ready 20 minutes before the first set required for
Q2 and so on.
“Each tyre stack has an electronic control box that
allows us to set precise timings,” explains Red Bull Racing
tyre technician Carl Anderson. “The engineers have
a programme and we base our tyre schedule around
that. For dry tyres, it might be a three-hour heating
programme, with the first two hours at something like
80°C, then boosted for the last hour at 110°C. The idea is
to heat the tyre carcass without cooking the compound. If
you heat the tyres for too long, the compound gets harder
and that affects the performance.”
With qualifying position often decided by differences
measured in the thousandths of a second, the precision
required from the driver is extreme: not simply a case of
getting the tyre ready for the lap but ensuring it peaks
at the right part of the lap: this may mean sacrificing a
little bit of performance in sector one to ensure the tyres
haven’t already started to go away in a complex final
sector, where the grip is of greater value.
“This year the tyres seem to be a little more ‘peaky’ –
more sensitive to temperature,” says Force India’s Sergio
Pérez. “That makes them a little harder to handle – but
the basics are the same: the main thing is getting them
into the right working range. In qualifying that means
getting the preparation right but also figuring out how
to maintain the temperature over the whole lap. It’s a bit
easier in the race because you don’t push so hard on any
one lap.”

Faster, more furious, more
muscular – F2’s new car will
test the stars of tomorrow
and power the champions
of the future to glory
Twelve months ago, F1 was full of excitement for a new
car that would provide a greater challenge for the drivers.
More downforce and more grip would lead to faster, more
spectacular cars. Now it’s Formula 2’s turn to follow suit.
The feeder series, which opened its 2018 campaign
in Bahrain and which will resume in two weeks’ time in
Azerbaijan, has been the perfect breeding ground for
future champions thanks to its status as a support event
at many F1 events and its similar use of Pirelli tyres. In
2018, it moves itself closer to F1 courtesy of a number of
changes to the chassis and a brand-new engine.
Starting with the new engine, Formula 2 has followed
STAR
F1’s lead in dropping V8 for V6 turbo power, with the
junior championship introducing a 3.4-litre Mechacrome
engine that is capable of producing 620bhp at 8750rpm.

REVOLUTIONARY FORMULA 2

Like Formula 1, the 2018 car will also

incorporate the Halo cockpit protection
device as part of its move to comply with
the full F1 2017 safety standards.
The bodywork is significantly different
to its predecessor as well. The longer car
features a lower and wider rear wing and
a multi-element swept back front wing in
much the same style as the aerodynamic
changes introduced in F1 a year ago. There
is also the inclusion of a small ‘shark fin’ on
the engine cover and revised sidepod design.
Those aspects all add up to a car with
incredible performance for a feeder series. In
2018, F2 cars will be able to reach 335km/h
at Monza, while braking at up to -3.5G and
pulling cornering loads just shy of 4G.
The car will be spectacular to drive, and in
order to produce close racing Pirelli tyres will
once again be used – matching the 2016 F1
dimensions – while the same DRS functionality
as seen in F1 is included to aid overtaking.
“For F2, we needed a car that will not
only educate but will also allow the drivers
who are most ready for F1 to shine brightest,”
says Charlie Whiting, FIA Director of F1
and Director, Single-Seater Department.
“The car has been developed to include
improved aesthetics as well as bringing the
safety level up to the highest standards for
single-seaters – and to ultimately bring it
closer to a modern F1 car on both these points.”

DHL FASTEST PIT
STOP AWARD
It happens in the blink of an eye, but the two seconds it takes to execute a
perfect pit-stop can make the difference between triumph and heartbreak. The
DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award was established in 2015 to recognise the feats of
choreographed mechanical wizardry performed by F1’s pit crews at every race.
Last year’s overall winner was Mercedes, with 472 points from 20 races, while
the fastest single stop was performed by Williams, which got Felipe Massa away
at the British Grand Prix in a lightning-quick 2.02 seconds.

In Baku last year, Lance Stroll became the

youngest rookie to finish on the podium
in Formula 1 at the age of 18 years
and 239 days. However, while Stroll’s
achievement was special, results of its
kind are becoming more common, with
seven of the top 10 youngest podium
finishers scoring their landmark results
over the last 15 years. In the early days of
F1, youthful triumph was much rarer, so
Bruce McLaren’s 1959 achievements are
all the more impressive. Like Stroll, he set
the record as youngest podium finisher,
coming home third at the British Grand
Prix in July 1959. However, he topped
that on 12 December by claiming the title
of youngest ever F1 winner with victory
in the US GP at Sebring. The remarkable
nature of his achievement, which was
worthy of a passionate embrace, was
borne out by the fact that his record
stood for 44 years, with Fernando Alonso
eventually claiming the accolade at the
2003 Hungarian GP.
