Notebooks literally do come in all shapes and sizes. Whilst there are some common sizes, many notebook
creators have their own, special sizes…which can make buying the perfect notebook size online a little
tricky, especially as it’s not in front of you. (We’ve probably all had the experience of “It looked
bigger/smaller in the picture!) So to help you decipher notebook descriptions and names, we’ve included
below the ultimate guide to notebook sizes. We hope you find it helpful in ensuring you get the size you
want, not the size you imagine! (If size is only one of the things you’re interested in, also check out our
notebook buying guide (https://blog.milligram.com/notebooks-101-ultimate-notebook-buying-guide/) or
our top 10 fountain pen friendly notebook guide (https://blog.milligram.com/10-fountain-pen-friendly-
notebooks/).)

A few quick rules of thumb on notebook sizes

– “Large” is not a specific or exact size. There is a LOT of size variation between “large” notebooks as this is
a term notebook manufacturers use to describe their own notebooks, relative to those within their own
brand, not relative to other notebook brands.

– If you’re shopping online, get a ruler out and physically sight the actual measurements in a listing. Your
mental perception of 20cm is often quite different to what it is when you actually see it in front of you on a
ruler.

– When we’re talking notebook sizes in this post, we mean ‘dimensions’, not thickness or number of pages.
However, when you are notebook shopping, ensure you understand the number of sheets vs pages, as both
can be used. 1 sheet is usually 2 pages (a back and a front).

Notebook sizes – Standard paper sizes

The most easily understandable and consistent notebook sizing are those that use ‘standard’ paper sizes.
These most commonly include the A series and B series, these come from ISO print standards, which
means they are consistent.

In Australia, and many other nations, A4 is the most common paper size — it’s the size we use in
photocopiers, for example. It’s also a common notebook size. A5 is also extremely common in notebooks.
(In fact, the only countries this standard is not common is the USA, Canada & Mexico).

The B series of standard sizes is also quite common, especially in Japanese and Korean notebooks.

TIP: The handy way to remember the relationship of any of the A sizes, is that each size is half of the
smaller number. So A4 is half of A3, A5 is half of A4, A6 is half of A5 and A7 is half of A6.

Notebook size chart – A series

Notebook paper size measurements A series:

A3: 297 x 420 mm (11.7 x 16.5 in)

A4: 210 x 297 mm (8.3 x 11.7 in)

A5: 148 x 210 mm (5.8 x 8.3 in)

A6: 105 x 148 mm (4.1 x 5.8 in)

A7: 74 x 105 mm (2.9 x 4.1 in)

Notebook size chart – B series

Notebook paper size measurements B series:

B5: 176 x 250mm (6.9 x 9.8 in)

B6: 125 x 176mm (4.9 x 6.9 in)

B7: 88 x 125mm (3.5 x 4.9 in)

When is A5 not exactly A5?

At Milligram, we usually include the relevant standard size in notebook’s title AND we’ll include the
measurements (this will also be in the product specifications). The measurements are needed because
sometimes a notebook brand isn’t quite A5, for example, but is extremely close. Most people don’t care, or
won’t notice, a 1cm difference in a notebook that we’ve denoted A5.
When it does matter; however, is when you’re adding a notebook cover or inserting into a compendium. In
that case, be sure that the measurements correspond to the cover you’re using, or the charts above if you’re
looking for something exactly A5, B6, etc.

Notebook size charts for popular notebook brands

While we sell many, many notebook brands at Milligram, three of the most popular brands are Moleskine
(https://milligram.com/moleskine-range), Delfonics Rollbahn (https://milligram.com/delfonics) and
Rhodia (https://milligram.com/rhodia). We’ve specifically created some size charts, by ranges in these
brands below, to show measurements and also deliver some perspective on how their sizes sit relative to
others in the range. We’ve also included a Palomino Blackwing pencil in each diagram to lend some
perspective to each diagram.
