Operating parameters

1. For given membrane elements, the maximum allowable chlorine or similarly

active oxidizing agents such as iodine, bromine and ozone is zero. Decolorization
is required to reduce oxidant levels to zero prior to the elements.
2. The elements shall be maintained in a clean condition, not fouled by particulate
matter or precipitates, suspended material, biological growth or oil.
3. The element flux rating shall not be exceeded during operation on an individual
element basis.
4. Static pressure of Permeate shall never exceed the static pressure of the feed.
There shall be no static Permeate backpressure on shutdown. After shipment and
prior to start-up, the elements must at all times be stored and maintained in
accordance with Ion Exchange element packing specification sheet. Ion Exchange
short-term and extended storage recommendations must be followed.

The Ion Exchange guarantee shall apply to the membrane system only when the system
is operated and maintained in accordance with the conditions of the design criteria
(Section A above). All subsequent instructions written and/or approved by Ion
Exchange short term excursions outside the design guidelines given above shall not void
this warranty if corrections are made prior to element damage occurring.

Other Conditions

1. Ion Exchange shall have the right to review the design operating instruction and
the operation of the reverse osmosis system, including pre-treatment and cleaning
procedures and chemicals and recommend change in operating parameters at any

time. Ion Exchange’s written approval of any chemicals to be added and the dosage
rate shall be secured prior to adding these chemicals to the system.

2. Failure of owner to follow Ion Exchange’s recommendation shall void this

performance guarantee. Ion Exchange shall have access to the reverse osmosis
system at any time during normal working hours.

Note: The above Outlet characteristics are envisaged for the inlet characteristics
mentioned. Any change in the above inlet analysis will change the expected outlet
analysis.

ANNEXURE - II
PROCESS DESCRIPTION

 REVERSE OSMOSIS PLANT

SCHEME
Raw Water Storage Tank (By Client) Filter Feed/Back wash Pumps  Sodium Hypo
Chlorite Dosing  MGF Filter Filtered Storage tank ( client scope )- Ro Feed pumps
Catridge filter  Antiscalant Dosing System  De-Chlorination Dosing System 
Reverse Osmosis System Remineralization Filters -- Post Chlorination system---UV--
Treated Water Tank (By Client) – Product water transfer pump( Client scope)—
Reject water tank& Transfer pump ( client scope)

Raw water feed Pump:

The Raw water is pumped through the MGF Unit by means of raw water feed pumps.
Chlorine Dosing Units:
The inlet water may contain organics in varying proportion to reduce the bacteria load
NaOCl is dosed. Chlorine is dosed with the help of a dosing pump and LDPE chemical
solution tank is provided for preparation of 10% concentrated solution. With the help
of electrically operated diaphragm type pump, NaOCl solution is dosed in water inlet line
in appropriate proportion.
Multigrade Grade Filter:
Multi Grade filter unit is provided as Primary filtering unit as per requirement. Raw
water shall be filtered by MGF in order to remove suspended solids which are present in
raw water, operation of plant is automatic

De Chlorination System (SMBS Dosing System):

Dechlorination is provided by dosing solution to the filters raw water upstream of
cartridge filter. Sodium bi Sulphate is injected by a duty pump and its one-day capacity
dosing tank. Chlorine is dangerous harm to the membrane, due to this dosing chlorine
convert to chlorides and comes out to RO reject.

Acid and Antiscalent Dosing System:

10 m3/hr BWRO Plant Ion Exchange Ltd.

Antiscalant to be dosed at an upstream of High pressure pump RO pumps to prevent
scaling of RO membranes. One solution tank for one-day requirement equipped with
Motor driven Stirrer, Discharge, drain and valves with one duty and one stand by dosing
pumps is provided.
Cartridge Filters:
Cartridge filters are PP vessel having PP wound cartridges for the filtration purpose. The
cartridges are replaceable and depending on the DP across the filter will be replaced.
Cartridge filter ensures SDI < 3 at the inlet of RO plant. The purpose of cartridge filter is
to remove the contaminants of dosage chemicals.
Following controls are provided for cartridge filter units.
ORP transmitter at common outlet of cartridge filter
Pressure gauge at inlet and outlet of each cartridge filter
Turbidity Transmitter on the outlet of the MGF filtration unit
Reverse Osmosis:
The chemical conditioned water will be passed through cartridge filter to achieve the
required SDI at the RO inlet. By means of high of high pressure pump the filtered water
will be pumped through reverse osmosis system to get the required permeate at the
outlet of RO. Osmosis is natural process. When a dilute solution is separated from a
concentrated solution by a semi permeable membrane, pure solvent flows from the
dilute solution to the concentrated one through the membrane. If the solvent concerned
is water, then pure water, separated from a salt solution by a semi permeable membrane
readily passes through the membrane. The concentrated solution becomes dilute with
this flow of pure water. This flow of water continues until the pressure created by the
osmotic head equals the osmotic pressure of the salt solution. This is known as
“Osmotic Equilibrium”. If an external pressure is applied on the concentrated solution
side, then one of the following three processes can occur:
If the applied pressure is less than the osmotic pressure, then pure water continues to
flow through the membrane. Its flow rate gets reduced, as it is proportional to the
difference between applied pressure and the osmotic pressure.
If applied pressure is equal to the osmotic pressure, then the net flow of pure water
through the membrane stops.

10 m3/hr BWRO Plant Ion Exchange Ltd.

If applied pressure is greater than the osmotic pressure, then the pure water flow is
reversed. It flows from the concentrated solution to the dilute solution side.
This third process is “Reverse Osmosis”. It is advantageously used to remove water
from the concentrated solution.
Following controls are provided for Reverse Osmosis skids.
Pressure indicator at the inlet/outlet and reject of each RO unit.
Low pressure switch at the suction of high pressure pump
High pressure switch at the discharge of high pressure pump
Flow Indicator at permeate outlet of each RO unit
Conductivity transmitter at the outlet of RO unit
pH transmitter at the inlet & Outlet of RO plant.
Pressure gauge at the inlet and outlet of RO Booster pump
Auto Membrane Flushing and Manual cleaning system:
One flushing tank will be supplied to provide water for the membrane flushing during
trip/shut down. The same tank will be used for Clean-In-Place (CIP) System for
membrane cleaning. The tank will be having low level indicating transmitter sequenced
to the control panel and it is to be ensured that the tank is full at any point of time, with
an indication on the control panel.
The tank is sized to provide sufficient fluid for the efficient operation of the procedures
that requires the greatest volume. The permeate water from the RO modules will be
delivered to the flushing tank directly, without chemical dosing. The system is designed
so that the tank fills automatically and a fill level is sustained. Product water pipe work
is arranged to prevent dehydration of the RO membrane due to osmosis during
emergency or planned shutdown of the plant.
