Answer any three of the following
1) Derive an expression for Stress Equilibrium for a three dimensional body. Use neat diagrams
wherever necessary.

2)Consider the bar shown in Fig. An axial load P = 200 X 103 N is applied as shown. Determine
a. Nodal displacements
b. Stress in each material.
c. Reaction Forces.

3)In the fig load P = 60 X 10 N is applied as shown in fig. Determine the displacement fiels stress and
support reactions in the body using penalty approach method. Take E = 20 X103 N/mm2. A = 250 mm2

4)For the two bar truss shown in figure find the displacements of node 1 and the stresses in all the
elements.Take E = 70 GPa and A = 200 mm2 for both elements.

5) What is a space truss? Derive the element stiffness matrix for a space truss element.

2) Derive the governing differential equation for steady state heat transfer with convective boundary
conditions.
3) A simply supported beam is subjected to uniformly distributed load over entire span. Determine
the bending moment and deflection at mid span by using Rayleigh Ritz method.

4) For the three bar truss shown in figure below, determine the displacements in node 1 and the
stress in element 3. Take A = 250 mm2, E = 200 GPa.

5) Derive the element stiffness matrix for a 1-D bar element.

1) State the properties of a Global Stiffness matrix and Element stiffness matrix
2) An aluminum rod tapers uniformly from 50 mm diameter to 25 mm in length of 0.5 m fixed at one
end. Find the stress in the bar if it is subjected to an axial tensile load of 10 KN at the free end. Idealize
the bar in two elements. ( Take E = 70 GPa)
3) What are weighted residual methods. List the methods and define each of them briefly?
4) Find the displacements, reaction forces and stresses induced in the axially loaded stepped bar
shown in the Figure. Take E = 2.1 x 105 N/mm2. A1= 50 mm2 A2=30 mm2.

5) A beam AB of span ‘L’ simply supported at the ends and carrying a concentrated load ‘w’ at the
centre ‘c’ as shown in figure below. Determine the deflection at the mid-span by using Rayleigh-Ritz
method. Use a suitable trigonometric trail function.
