1 Introduction

STUP Consultants Pvt. Ltd. has been appointed by M/s ITD CEMENTATION INDIA LTD.
as Detailed Design structural consultant for design and construction of elevated viaduct of
length 6.305 kms from chainage 796.983 to ch: chainage 5691.700, chainage 6202.500 to
chainage 7100 and chainage 7187.000 to chainage 7700.000 between Prajapati Nagar to
Sitaburdi.
According to the Employer’s Requirements, the Geotechnical Interpretative Report is one
of the documents to be submitted to the Employer.

2 Report – Objectives and Scope

Purpose and requirements are defined under supporting documents as follows:

A geotechnical engineering study comprising of field investigation and laboratory tests has
been carried out along the proposed alignment. This Geotechnical Interpretative Report
presents the findings of the geotechnical engineering study.

This Geotechnical Interpretive Report includes review of Site Investigation results,

Geotechnical Interpretation of site investigation work and selection of engineering
parameters required for the design of structures etc.

The purpose of the study is to interpret subsurface ground conditions of the site and to
present an evaluation and summary of the soil properties for the design of the temporary
and permanent structures along the alignment.

This report refers to the interpretation of geotechnical data from Final Factual Soil
Investigation Report provided by soil investigation agency C.E. Testing Company Pvt. Ltd.,
Anandjiwala Technical Consultancy, and Constell Consultants Pvt. Ltd. appointed by M/s
ITD Cementation India Ltd.

3 Geology and Background

The region forms part of Deccan Plateau having flat topped and terraced features.
Eastward and northeastwards the landscape changes due to the change in the underlying
rocks. The rocks of Gondwana series present a low rolling topography with a poor soil

cover and vegetation. On the north the upland ranges are the extension of Satpuras which
gradually narrows down towards west. South of these upland range stretches the Ambegad
hills, the western extremity of which is the Nagpur district. The Ramtek temple is on the
spur of this range. The Girad hill range extends along the southeast and separates the
valley of the Kar from that of Jamb upto Kondhali. Another main hill range runs northwards
through Katol taluka from Kondhali to Kelod separating the Wardha and Wainganga valleys.
The northeastern and east central parts of the district is drained by the Wainganga and its
tributaries. The central and western portion is drained by the Wena which is a tributary of
Wardha River.

4 Seismic Conditions

The seismic hazard map of India was updated in 2002 by the Bereau of Indian Standards
(BIS). The new map includes the central districts of Beed (Bir), Dharashiv (Osmanabad) and
Latur, along the eastern sections of Ahmednagar, Pune, Satara and Sangli districts in Zone
III. All of these areas lay in Zone I or II in the BIS 1984 map. The zones in the rest of the
state are the same as in the previous map. The districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri and Satara are
the only districts to lie in Zone IV. The remaining western and north-western districts all lie in
Zone III. The central and eastern districts lie in Zone II. It must be noted that BIS estimates
the hazard, based in part, on previous known earthquakes. Since the earthquake database
in India is still incomplete, especially with regards to earthquakes prior to the historical
period ( before 180 AD.), these zones offer a rough guide to the earthquake hazard in any
particular region and needs to be regularly updated.

The area under study (Nagpur) falls in Seismic Zone II.

5 Geotechnical Investigations

Boreholes were executed along the alignment to determine the ground condition and
engineering parameters of soil for the design works more precisely.

The Investigation is summarized below –

1. Boreholes – 129 nos.

2. Standard Penetration Tests : at 1.50 m intervals in each borehole

3. Ground Water Table Location

The logs of the boring and the test results are given in Factual Geotechnical Investigation
Report, ITDCEM/NMRCL/R4/PN/2017/153, ITDCEM/NMRCL/R4/PN/2017/204,

submitted to NMRCL by ITDC and some relevant data is included in Annexure A-4.

6 Interpretations General
In general the sub surface strata present at the project site can be described predominantly as
moderately weathered to completely weathered /weathered granite gneiss overlain by Silty
Clay/Clayey silt with bands of Silty sand/ Sandy silt at a number of locations.

For selection of design engineering parameters of soil, the boreholes conducted at the location
are grouped and discussed separately as following –

The design parameter of a particular strata is considered as the average representative value of
the strata obtained from in-situ given in GFR. Wherever the results are not available or found
erratic the design parameters are derived from the standards, codes, books as well as
literatures based on the type of soil. The various charts and tables referred are attached as
Annexure A-3.

6.1 Interpretation of Field Results

6.1.1 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

Field SPT Value (Observed N) along the depth has been primarily used for interpretation of
other engineering properties of the various soil and rock strata. The soil can be identified
predominantly as Silty Clay/Clayey silt/ Clay with bands of Silty sand/ Sandy silt at a
number of locations. The rock is mainly moderately weathered to completely weathered
/weathered granite gneiss. The consistency of soil and rock is determined from the SPT N
values.

6.2 Interpretation of Laboratory Test Results

Laboratory Tests were performed rarely on very few samples and hence ignored. SPT N values
has been predominantly used for determination of engineering properties of the soil and rock.

6.3 Ground water table

Ground water table is maximum 10.20m BGL at P-8 and minimum 2.60m BGL at BH-P127/125
(Refer Factual Geotechnical Investigation Report (GFR No: ITDCEM/NMRCL/R4/PN/2017/153,
ITDCEM/NMRCL/R4/PN/2017/204, ITDCEM/NMRCL/R4/PN/2017/205 and
ITDCEM/NMRCL/R4/PN/2017/211 respectively.

7 Description of Soil Strata

The stratification and engineering properties of soil is discussed in following session. The top
layer along most of the alignment consists of a bitumen layer mixed with stone

chips/pebbles/gravels/silty clay with thickness varying from 0.8m to 4.1m. The average
thickness of soil underlying bitumen layer, consisting predominantly of silty clay/ clayey silt/clay
with bands of Silty sand/ Sandy silt at a number of locations overlying the rock strata varies in
thickness from 2.3m to 14.3m. The SPT N value of the soil varies from 13 to 73.

The rock strata encountered below the soil layer consists mainly of moderately weathered to
completely weathered /weathered granite gneiss. The moderately weathered rock has SPT N
value greater than 200 (all SPT values more than 200 has been restricted to 200) whereas the
completely weathered rock has SPT N value ranging from 125 to 170.

*Note: As per the meeting dated 22nd June, 2017 between GC and ITD/STUP, it was decided
that any SPT value less than 100 is to be ignored while evaluation of pile capacity. Minutes of
the meeting is attached in Annexure A-3.

Engineering properties of soil stratum are summarized below for this location grouping together
Boreholes having similar strata.

Note:
1. Extrapolated SPT (N) values has been incorporated following proceedings of the
meeting dated 22nd June, 2017 between GC and ITD/STUP regarding method for
determination of vertical pile capacity as per Method 2 of IRC 78-2014. Minutes of
Meeting has been included in Annexure- A-3.

2. Suggested values of undrained cohesion are as per IRC 78-2014, Method 2, Pg-79.
As per the above stated meeting extrapolated SPT (N) values <100 are to be ignored
during pile capacity determination. As such, undrained cohesion and angle of friction
values have not been suggested for N<100.

3. SPT N value and thickness of various strata have been derived by taking average
value of that particular strata in the various Boreholes considered.
