APPLICATIONOFACOUSTICEl\但 SSION FORSTRUCTUREDIAGNOSIS

I.INTRODUCTION

Acousticemission(AE)testingofstructureshasbeenutilizedinvariousapplications fromaerospacetowelding.CurrentstatusofAEtechnologyisreviewedwithemphasison AEdamageassessment.WehaveaccumulatedvastknowledgeonAEandsuccessfulcases abound,althoughdetailsusuallyaredifficulttoaccess.Weexaminesomeofrecentapplicaュ tionsandtrytopointthewayforimprovedAEdiagnosisofs仕uctural healthanddiscuss gapsinourunderstandingofAEandlimitsofstandardAEapproach. Whenastructurefails,soundsorultrasoundsaregeneratedandtheseareknownas acousticemission(AE).Mechanicalwavespropagate 仕om asourcewherefailureoccurred tosensorsplacedusuallyonthesurfaceofthestructure.Suchwavesaredetectedandanaュ lyzedtoevaluatetheintegrityofthestructure.Thisisusedasamethodofnondestructive testingbecauseAEisverysensitiveandcandetectfailureatmicrocrackings同ge. AcousticemissiontechnologyissimilartoseismologyexceptAEisinthescaleofengiュ neeringstructures.ResearchonAEstartedinthe1930s,butitsapplicationsbegan~ 50 years agointheaerospaceandgeotechnicalfields.WhenAEoccursingeologicstructures,itis oftenreferredto ぉ micro-seismic activityorAE/MS.Researchanddevelopmente汀 orts conュ tinuedtothisdayandAE(andAE/MS)applicationshaveexpandedtovariousfields. Acousticemission isadynamictechnique.AEoccurswhenacrackpropagates,or whencrackfacesfretagainsteachother.Usuallythisoccurswhenthestructureisstressed. AEactivitiesrisesharplywhenlocalstressapproachesthecriticalfailurepoint.Incontrast, itproducesnoindicationwhenthereareonlybenigndefects,suchasvoidsandnonュ growingcracks.Acousticemissionisalsoaglobalinspectiontechnique,analyzingthe ul仕 asonic wavescomingfromafaultdetectedbymultiplesensors;thatis,unlikeultrasonic pulse-echotechniqueorradiography,inspectionpathisnotpredefinedbyappliedstimulus andnovolumetricscanningisneeded.AEcanworkwithoutknowingdefectlocationbeュ forehand.A single 同 st evaluatesanentirestructurequicklyandeffectivelywhenadequate sensorplacementscoverit;itcanprovideinsitu,continuousmonitoring.Whenaspecific areaneedsattention,AEcanalsomonitorlocally,filteringoutexternalnoise.Acoustic emissionisalsoavisualtechniquethatcanidenti命, locate anddisplaythefaul飴 producing AEsignalsinalmostrealtime.Thispartowesmuchtotheadvancesofsignalprocessing
