When severe weather arises, staff will keep alert for worsening conditions through the
National Weather Service and an additional weather update for the daycare location’s zip code.
In the case that a tornado is spotted and the sirens/alerts are activated, staff will follow through
the pre-written procedures to ensure the safety of the children and themselves. Tornado drills
will be conducted at a minimum of one time per year.
Tornado Watch
1. Staff will keep revising for worsening conditions and periodically check for any alerts.
2. Staff member assigned to take the first aid kit will do so, with a battery-powered radio
and other supplies inside.
3. Children will be kept within the building until conditions improve and become safe.
4. Phones will be used to emergency calls and preparedness.
Tornado Warning
1. Staff will secure the children immediately, each member counting their predesignated
children.
2. Staff will lead the children to the predetermined underground shelter.
3. Children will be placed in the center of the room, in a duck and cover position.
4. Children will be counted once more.
5. Staff will not move children until cleared by a weather alert. Just because the siren turns
off, it does not mean the danger is over.
After the danger is over, children will be inspected for any injuries and counted again.
During the tornado warning, phones will not be answered as children and staff will be in the
duck and cover position. Parents will be called after the weather service has determined the
danger is over to report the condition or discuss the pickup of their children.
Fire Policy
In the occasion of a fire, staff will proceed accordingly to the following steps to ensure
the safety of your children and themselves. Fire exits will be predetermined, fire alarms checked
monthly, and any other precautions necessary, such as inspecting appliances. Fire drills will be
conducted a minimum of 4 times per year.
During A Fire
1. Staff will collect their designated children and lead them out of the building through the
nearest exit.
2. Assigned staff will obtain the first aid kit.
3. Children will be led to a predetermined area away from the building, where a head count
will be performed.
4. While children are inspected for injury, 911 will be called if not done so already.
5. Parents will be called to report the situation and pickup.
6. Staff will stay with the children until they are safely picked up by their parents.
Communication will remain between the parents and the daycare on the conditions of the
facility, and will be told when children can return or if they will be in a temporary location. If
this is not available, they will be given an estimate of how long the children will be unable to go
to daycare.
Shooter/Bomb Threat Policy
Shooter
In the case of an active shooter, the first person to identify the situation should alert
others using the radios located within the daycare building of the perpetrator’s location. He/she
will be clear and straight to the point, using plain words. Staff will follow the next steps
according to their situation. Shooter drills will be performed once a year.
Bomb Threat
Bomb threats, even if they are delivered or assumed as pranks, will not be treated lightly.
The following steps will be taken to ensure the safety of your children and staff. Bomb threat
drills will be performed at least once a year.
In both cases of a shooter or bomb threat, parents will be notified after authorities deem it
safe to do so. Staff will remain with the children until each is picked up by their registered
guardian, and will continue to receive updates on the situation.
