Write down three aspects of the reading that stand out to you regarding description and

upload it to Canvas before class time on 2/7.

1. One piece that stuck out to me was details. Patricia Hampl uses details in every
sentence from 600-pound gorilla to a ragged peasant. She uses extra details to portray
the meaning which goes far beyond saying “large gorilla” or “peasant”.

2. A second aspect that stuck out to me was the use of the senses. She uses all the senses
to help the reader feel they are in the piece. She uses terms such as “I could see it” and
using terms like “tongue drawn”.

3. A third aspect is colors. Even though the piece is in writing the reader clearly sees colors
through the description done by Hampl. She talks almost in color like when she talks
about a caterpillar turning into a butterfly or when talking about the white shrouds of
blizzard snow.
