scheduled for April 23rd. This presentation will assume that all kids have never been on the river

before and the lesson will be planned accordingly. The topic that will be focused in the heaviest

will be that of the clothing and personal gear needed for the kids to bring for themselves. The

three topics that will be covered and that successful students will attain include;

1. Anatomy/parts of a raft.

2. Gear/what to wear/safety.

3. Paddle commands.

Props necessary/resources:

PFD, Paddle. (mostly going to be on powerpoint)

Prior knowledge: none

Prep: Acquiring gear/resources from ORL dep.

Google Slides- these will mainly be lecture based but very interactive; class discussion is going

to be a must:

1. Anatomy of the raft/paddle(3 min)-

Picture of a raft with labels pointing to different parts(Floor, thuarts, tube, bow, stern,

etc…)

Paddle pic w/ parts(T-Grip, Shaft, Throat, Blade)

Why imp? Kids will follow commands more fluidly if knowledge of these parts and their

purpose is understood.

2. Gear/What to wear and bring for a successful day(10 min)-

(Slide pic shown of the following) Swim shorts, tshirt, closed toed shoes; preferably old

tennis shoes you won’t mind getting wet or beat up a little. Water bottle and side snacks.

Sunglasses with croakies and a hat with a visor.

Why imp? Kids need to come prepared on their own which is why this presentation is necessary.

This will make a guide’s job easier.

3. Paddle commands/technique(5 min)-

(rafting pic) Intro to forward, back, right, and left paddle. Also the importance of

synchronization, and covering T-Grip.

Why imp? Kids will know what to expect, and will know why these commands and techniques

are important before we get on the river.

Class “exam” to finish(5 min)-

Questions are addressed to the whole class. Turns into an interactive discussion quiz.
