Information for Actors

What is it?

Rehearsed performances of new writing, with script in hand. A monthly theatre

event, on the last Monday of each month, at the King’s Arms, Salford. The purpose
of the event is for writers to see their scripts come to life and get feedback from
other professionals, in order to develop their scripts. And for Actors to get an
opportunity to perform and network

Although we don’t yet have a name for our night (suggestions welcome!), we have a
lot of other info for you!

Our Values:

 Friendly: We want these nights to be a really supportive, informal place for

actors to perform work that they may not otherwise get an opportunity to
perform (e.g. not roles they’re usually cast in) and writers to take risks and
see their work come to life, even if it’s not yet a polished piece. We want it to
be a space to play, to develop and to create together.
 Quality: Although it will not be a finished product, we also want it to be of
high quality. It is an opportunity for writers to see what their work might look
like as a professional piece. For this reason we will primarily cast professional
actors and directors.
 Developing talent: We also want to support emerging talent. Therefore
actors and directors who do not yet have professional credits will become
associate members. And we will endeavor to create opportunities at some of
our events for emerging actors and directors to showcase their talent and
develop their skills
 A community: we want this to be a place for theatre professionals to make
genuine friendships and so priority when choosing scripts and actors for
castings will be given to those who have attended on nights where they are
not directly involved
 Workload-light: These are voluntary events and no-one will be paid
(including the writers, producers, directors etc). Any money received from
audience members will be used to cover any costs involved. We want the
nights to be an easy, fun thing for everyone involved. Therefore the shows
will only require one rehearsal and performances are with script in hand. You
do not need to learn the script.
Guidelines for Actors:

 We hope actors will treat the process in the same way that they would a paid
professional role.
 All actors approached to take part in a rehearsed reading should have the
opportunity to read the script before agreeing to take on a particular role.
Actors are asked to respond within two days, otherwise the part will be
offered to someone else.
 Once an actor has agreed to take part in a reading, it will be assumed that
they will carry out this responsibility and attend the rehearsal, which will
usually take place on the day before the reading at the Kings Arms Salford. If
after committing to a casting, you are unable to attend either the rehearsal
or the performance due to paid work, you will be expected to find a suitable
replacement for yourself.
 If an actor is asked by the director to attend an extra rehearsal, it is up to the
actor to decide whether to attend.
 All actors are reminded that punctuality for all rehearsals is very important as
the rehearsal period is very short.
 Writers will provide refreshments for the cast during the rehearsal. Please
let the writer know of any dietary requirements you may have.
 Actors' opinions and suggestions during rehearsals are an invaluable part of
the development of the play. However, it is the director's responsibility to
ensure that the short rehearsal period is used for the benefit of the whole
cast, and to progress the development of the reading. This may mean that
the director has to limit discussion to make best use of the time.

NB: Scripts should be carried and used during all performances
