Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions Portfolio Directions

Unit 3 Lesson 5

Materials:
 Bowls or something to put in the ingredients
 Measuring cup
 Thermometer
Suggested reactants:
baking powder, antacid tablets, yeast, powdered candy straws,
tooth paste (Do not use any hazardous solids.)
milk, vinegar, water, 3% hydrogen peroxide

(Do not use bleach, ammonia, or other hazardous liquids.)

***Bleach and Ammonia can give off harmful gases when mixed
with certain chemicals***
I don’t have antacid tablets but I do have the antacid power.

Introduction:
How does the absorption and release of energy
Affect temperature change during a chemical reaction?

Hypothesis:
I think that yeast and the milk together would make it warmer because of the yeast. And
the antacid with vinegar would become a cooler temperature. The baking powder with the
hydrogen peroxide would get a little warmer.

Procedure:

1. Take the temperature of the liquid before you put it in with the solids.
2. Then put in the liquid with the solid.
3. Observe the reactions.
4. And then take the temperature. And see if it got warmer or if it got colder.
5. Keep it away from flame
6. Don’t add more than you’re supposed to in the bowl or it will overload.
7. If you get injured report to your Learning coach and have adult supervision.

milk. And it turned

I toke the temperature of the liquids before I put it in with the solids. The Milk was 53 °.
The Hydrogen Peroxide was 70 °. The vinegar was 70 °.

At the end when I added the liquids with the solids the temperature changed. The milk
with the yeast changed to 70 °. This makes it
Conclusion:

1. The data did support two of my experiments. The one that I got wrong was
the baking powder with the hydrogen peroxide it got just a little bit cooler its
started off with 70 ° and it ended with 58 °. The yeast with milk did get
warmer it started with 53 ° it ended with 70 °. And the antacid with vinegar
started with 70 ° and it ended with 52 °.
Which type of reaction releases more heat than it absorbs: endothermic or
exothermic? The yeast with milk was more like endothermic. The baking
powder with hydrogen peroxide was more like exothermic. And the antacid
with vinegar was more like exothermic.

What is activation energy? Activation energy is the minimum amount of

energy that is normally required to activate atoms or molecules to a
condition. This makes it undergo to a chemical transformation or physical
transport.
