Questions:

Q-1 Explain/Define the following.

a. Cavitation Problem in Pumps
b. Volumetric Efficiency in Positive Displacement Pumps
c. Temperature Pattern in Continuous dryer 5 Marks
d. Heat Transfer Unit (HTU)
e.
Benzene at 37.8 oC is pumped through the system shown in figure below at the rate of 9.09
Q-2 m3/hr. The reservoir is at atmospheric pressure. The gauge pressure at the end of the
discharge line is 345 kN/m2. The discharge is 10 ft and the pump suction 4 ft above the
level in the reservoir. The discharge line 1 ½ -in (ID = 1.61 in) Schedule no 40 pipe. The
friction in the suction line is known to be 3.45 kN/m2, and that in the discharge line is 37.9
kN/m2. The mechanical efficiency of the pipe 60%. The density of Benzene is 865 kg/m3,
and its vapor pressure at 37.8 oC is 26.2 kN/m2. Calculate
(a) The developed head of the pump
(b) The total power input and
(c) If the pump manufacturer specifies a required NPSHR of 3.5 m, will the pump be
suitable for this service? 10 Marks

Q-3 Calculate the diameter and length of an adiabatic rotary dryer to dry 1270 lb/hr of a heat
sensitive solid from an initial moisture content of 15% to a final moisture content of 0.5%,
both dry basis. The solids have a specific heat of 0.52 Btu/lb-oF; they enter at 80 oF and 10 Marks
must not be heated to a temperature above 125 oF. Heating air is available at 260 oF and a
humidity of 0.01lb of water per pound of dry air. The maximum allowable mass velocity of

the air is 700 lb/ft2-hr. The inlet wet-bulb temperature of the air (Twb) is 102 oF and the
latent heat of vaporization at 102 oF is 1036 Btu/lb and the specific heats in Btu/lb-oF for
solids, vapor and liquids are Cps=0.52, Cpv=0.45 and CpL=1.0 respectively.
Q-4 How to measure the pressure by using the following types of manometers
a. Differential U-tube manometer when the points A, B are at different levels
b. Inverted Differential manometer when both A, B are at the same levels 5 Marks
