My Favorite Song

There are two things in the world that I can not live without, one is bubble tea and

another one is my lovely headphone. It’s so hard for me to survive for even one day

without my music around me, if so, my body will feel so uncomfortable from the

bottom to the top. It’s noteworthy that I also feel my music taste is a little different

from the major because I really hate some soft music, folk songs, country music, girls

or boys groups’ music style which are very popular in both China and Korea.

However, there is one song in my song list and I have played it with my music player

for hundreds of times. That is Young and Beautiful. Every time I go to Karaoke with

my friends I will definitely sing this song, and my friends even call this song as my

representative song.

This song was written for an affecting story which really impressed me. It was

initially produced for the movie The Great Gatsby and sang by Lana Del Rey, who

later became my favorite musician ever. I remember when I watched the movie for the

first time, I was so touched by the story that the handsome and intelligent soldier

Gatsby fell in love with the young and beautiful lady Daisy before he went to the

warpath. Unfortunately when he came back five years later he found Daisy has

already married another rich man that she didn’t really love. Yes like all the other sad

love stories, they missed each other but Gatsby was always looking forward to

meeting Daisy. After all these years when they finally met each other and played fun

in Gatsby’s grand house, the background music went on continuously and kept asking
Gatsby that “Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?” Then

Daisy suddenly became so upset and wept that she realized they would never have a

chance to be together again. Finally, the music fades away and brought the audience

back to the tragic reality.

I’d rather call the song a poet than a song because the lyrics are so gorgeous, the

emotions are so abundant and it also shows the beauty of structure. It describes a

couple who spent their wildest summer days happily and the woman adores her man

so much. In the verse it briefly implies the woman’s wealthy life experience by

simply listing “brilliant diamonds” and “bel air”, but she just keeps recalling what

happened in one summer, and all in her memory are “city lights”, “rock ’n’ roll” and

“show”. In the chorus, it says “will you still love me when I’m no longer young and

beautiful ” repeatedly, which indicates that the woman is not that sure if her man will

always love her the same rather than just like her glamorous looking. During the

bridge, the woman’s plaint goes “oh that face, on that body”, which shows she is so

obsessed with her man and his appearance , and even want to go to heaven with him

after she dies. In the end, the previous question goes on and on and seems like become

even more urgent and gradually turns to whisper in low voice, giving listeners an

impression that the woman actually knows the answer to the question that her man

will not love her when she have lost all she got.

The reason why this song means so much to me is that it changed my music taste

and also my state of mind during a certain period of time. When I first got to know

this song and the amazing songwriter Lana Del Rey three years ago, I was suffering
from a very bad period of time because of some personal issues. During that time,

Lana’s beautiful voice gave me the power whenever I felt so upset and almost lost my

hope for life. When I was walking alone in the strange city streets and feeling empty, I

always listened to her music. Actually her music style is not that positive and people

usually describe it that her music has a Sadcore, whereas it always alleviates my pain

and makes me feel empathetic. From then on I began to be addicted to Lana’s music

style and feel her opinions and wishes about the world. Even when life becomes

confusing and despairing sometimes, Lana always says ”be wild and have fun”, to

remind me that I should enjoy and try to remember every sparkling moment in my life,

and also do not waste every second because the “the world is ours and we can’t refuse

it”. Some of her lyrics are truly words of wisdom.

Thanks to this unique song Young and Beautiful, I felt that how amazing a song

could be and also stepped into a new music world. It’s true that music can heal

people’s aching soul and encourage people to face the world with a positive mind.

Moreover, I want to mention that, though I love the song so much, honestly I think the

woman that described in the song is kind of crazy and with a unrealistic mind. Our

life is far more than just a love story. The truth is, you can not regard one person as

your whole world, and there’s no way that someone can’t really survive without

another person whether their lovers or families. I really appreciate people’s courage to

love someone so deep or even devote themselves to love, but it’s just about the

courage, since falling in love with someone should not occupy our whole life. The

meaning of life is far more than merely a love story, there are a lot of other colorful
and hopeful things happening in our precious life.
