Dear Alumni,

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the Port Byron Alumni annual meeting and banquet on
Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Dana L. West Jr/Sr High School.

The evening will begin at 5:30pm with a short reception and a chance to visit with friends. The banquet will begin
at 6:15 followed by the annual alumni meeting with a special recognition for the class of 1969, and the class of
1994.

Along with the Alumni Scholarships, we will also announce the recipient of the Kelly Green Lipiska Memorial
Scholarship, new inductees to the PB Hall of Fame and the very first Pioneer Award.

For 2019, the Alumni Officers elected not to send invitations through the mail to Alumni who have graduated
between 2000-2018. This decision essentially has saved enough funding to support one additional award. If you
have a family member that you feel would be interested in attending the banquet, please have them provide
us with an e-mail address (tkdtruex@aol.com) or have them respond through the Port Byron Alumni page
on Facebook.

The Port Byron Alumni Association thanks you for your dedication to our Association through your membership
and donations in support of our Port Byron Students.

Thank You,
Ken Emerson, President
Your Port Byron Alumni Association – News & Highlights
Alumni – we hope you can join us, we have lots of fun and fellowship abounds!

Alumni Weekend begins with a band concert and ice cream social on Friday, June 7 th at 7 PM hopefully
outside the Athletic Entrance. If you would like to ‘dust off your instrument’ and play, please contact Dana L.
West High School band director James Bearup at jbearup@pbcschools.org for music. It is great fun for both
players and the audience members. Last year we had 15 alums from the classes of 1961 to 2017 joining the current
band members for patriotic and movie themed music.

Dawn Roe has some exciting contributions to our business meeting – a football retrospective (you are invited to
share your memorabilia on a special table) and honoring our first Pioneer Hall of Famer. The Pioneer Award, a
new sub-division to the Alumni Hall of Fame, will be awarded for the first time . It honors high school graduates
prior to centralization for career excellence and/or exceptional community achievements. The first recipient of this
award will be given in memory of Dr. Frank McElroy Huntoon, MD, a bacteriologist and graduate of the Port
Byron Free Academy Class of 1897. Huntoon devoted a career to teaching and researching infectious diseases. His
work Included the development of the pneumonia antibody, as well as publishing in many scientific journals. His
injection methods were also used in Government clinical trials at Bellevue Hospital in NYC. Please join us for a
special program presented by Dawn Roe as she highlights the life of Dr, Huntoon (1881-1948) a graduate who
contributed to the betterment of mankind.

Hall of Fame Inductees Clifton Mills (1943) and Mary DeBottis Guiffreda (1940) will be honored.

We appreciate your support of our Awards program and thought you might like to hear of some successes!
Alumni award winner Amanda Chuttey (2018) thanks you for her award: “I am thoroughly enjoying my time at
Nazareth College. The alumni scholarship made the cost of textbooks and supplies much easier to manage. I have
made lifelong friends and am already looking forward to next fall.” Amanda is the starting goalie for field hockey,
on the Dean’s list and works part-time at campus safety. Sandra Waterman received a Port Byron Alumni
award in 2001. Sandra used the award to help pay for textbooks and supplies, which were surprisingly
expensive. Sandra also sincerely appreciates the encouragement she felt from being the recipient of the award.
“My name is Timothy Cobb and I graduated from Port Byron Central School in 2000. I attended LeMoyne
College and then Medical School at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. I secured a residency position
and spent 5 years in Philadelphia where I met my wife. We decided to move back to Central New York and start
our family. I was an Emergency and family physician at St. Joseph’s hospital for 5 years. Last year, when the
opportunity to practice medicine closer to my home town became available, I took a job at Auburn Community
Hospital. It has been an honor to care for the communities that helped lay the foundation for my journey. I was a
past alumni award winner and cannot thank the committee enough for taking a chance on me. Your hard work and
dedication provides an invaluable resource to our community and are an essential component for future student’s
success. So thank you!” Mark DeBois (2002) graduated from the University of Buffalo with a degree in Civil
Engineering. “I have worked at Kiewit, a Fortune 500 company with revenues consistently over $8 billion, since
graduation and have held numerous roles and titles including field engineer, estimator, lead estimator,
superintendent, project engineer, project manager, chief estimator, and sr. engineer. I have helped build some very
challenging, unique infrastructure projects and have also estimated all types of projects from dams to transit
stations, bridges to substations, and everything in between, ranging from $100k to $1B+. The scholarship money
helped buy books and a new computer for college, which gave me my foundation for my career today.”

A number of folks celebrated the 21st reunion at our ‘southern’ outpost. All are invited to 22nd
Florida Reunion gathering on January 25, 2020 at the Golden Corral Restaurant in
Zephyrhills from 11-3. Come enjoy a day of reminiscing about the good old days at Port Byron
and find out what your classmates have been up to. Guests are welcome. There will be a tasty
buffet lunch, lots of laughs and spirited discussion! For more information please contact Ken
Aldrich at kenaldrich76@lcloud.com OR Virginia Benedict Halstead at ghalstead@gmail.com
