1 Exercises Intro
What is the maximum number of cells that can be seen in one NPO ?
24,000 cells with cluster configuration
2 Exercises Operation
The solution is animated in the slide : during slide show, click once to show the answers.
Only counters listed in the comments of previous slide should be studied. Not all counters are used !

Note 1: open the counters' tab before the drag and drop, otherwise it doesn't work (the tree needs to
be created)
Note 2 : a "quick drop" selects the counters but doesn't select the counter's tree. You need to click on
"counters" to see the result. A long drop (> 2s) will select the counters AND display the tree. This
duration can be defined in the user preferences.
Don't hesitate to introduce the "favorites" (= RNO's Best Of) in order to keep the indicators
selection in memory.
Report 1
Filter cells with RTCH drop rate > 3.0 % - right click on the column header, select filter.
Select and propagate these cells – right click on the cells, or on the icon on the left, and choose
"propagate selected network elements"
How many cells ? Answer : the number is written at the bottom of
the cell tree.
Remove the filter – right click on the column header, and remove filter.
Highlight and open the legend : select and propagate all cells that exceed the orange threshold
for the RTCH drop rate – highlight : the yellow bulb in the left menu. Open legend : the legend
icon in the left menu.
How many cells ? Answer : thanks to the legend, "select" all red +
orange cells. Then propagate selected objects.
Report 2
Highlight and open the legend : select and propagate all cells that exceed the orange threshold
for the RTCH drop rate
How many cells ? Answer :
Order the cells : highest call_drop_BSS_remote_TC_rate on top – double click on the column
header
Which cell is the worst one ? Answer :
Select and propagate this cell. Find this cell's TRXs : - drag and drop the propagated cell to the
TRX mode.
Which TRXs of this cell have the same problem ? Answer : - you must execute a new
view for these TRX. You should not do a drill down, because it will display ALL TRX of ALL
cells of report 2. BEWARE : spatial drill down can work only if indicators are available at TRX
level.
Perform a spatial roll up (x2) on report 2 – spatial roll up x 2 means that you click once, wait,
and then click one more time. First roll up : BSC level, second roll up : Network.
Is the problem impacting the BSC ? Answer : if the BSC has a bad
average value (first spatial roll up), then we can assume the problem is actually on a bigger
scale.
Report 3
Spatial drill down to check TRX traffic on those cells
Is there any TRX that carries no traffic ? – visual analysis, or by using filter, or order, etc.
Temporal drill down to check hourly traffic evolution for those TRX
Is there any activity ? – first, you need to propagate this TRX ! if you do a temporal drill down
for many objects, you can only see one hour (the first hour of the displayed period)
Temporal roll-up (x2) to check weekly traffic
Report 4
Rotate the view – use the icon to switch axis. Interesting in this situation, to check time
evolution of few indicators.
Highlight
Is there any threshold exceeded ? Answer : - use the highlight.
Select BSC with highest CDR
Temporal drill down, is there one day with high CDR ? Answer : - temporal drill down of one
week shows only one day (the Monday), but since we have only one object, you should see
the seven days of the week.
Temporal roll up, what is the monthly CDR ? Answer :
Spatial drill down, is there one cell(s) with high CDR ? Answer : - use order.
Spatial roll up, what is the CDR for the network ? Answer :
TCH_Assign_Fail_BSS
TCH_Assign_Cong
TCH_Assign_prep_fail_BSS
TCH_Assign_Unsuccess_Rate
SDCCH Drop
SDCCH_drop_radio
SDCCH_drop_BSS
SDCCH_drop_rate
Call_Setup_Success_rate
SDCCH_assign_request
Select all these indicators and put them in one "new folder" in the Favorites
then open "Data / Favorites / Organize" and organize these indicators in subfolders.

By checking the properties of "Alc_Mono_QoS", you can read its template. Answer the following
questions : - purpose : describe one report in detail, so the trainees can understand the process to
build a new report.
1. How many views ?
2. What is the name of the 1st view ?
3. Can you find it among the Views in the functions browser ?
4. How many indicators ?
5. Which ones are on the primary axis ?
6. On the secondary one ?
7. Why ?
Execute the 1st QoS view for one cell, for the last 10 hours
Execute Alc_Mono_QoS for the same cell, for the past 10 hours
Observe … Differences ? None… A report is a assembly of many views.
How can I compare CDR between GSM900 cells and DCS1800 cells ?
Create a cell zone with all cells with FREQUENCY RANGE = GSM1800 and another cell zone for all
cells with FREQ RANGE = GSM900.
Check the properties of FREQ RANGE to know which values can be used (located in Design)
2. Depending on your network, create one zone per "CELL TYPE" AND per "FREQUENCY RANGE"
(single, umbrella, mini, micro or indoor) – object type = CELL, filter object type = CELL, 2
criteria (w/ intersection). Ensure the criteria contains a valid condition and the value is correct.
For instance GSM900 is not the same as 900 or gsm900 or gsm_900, etc. Also, one criteria only
can be used, by using "AND" between the two criteria.
3. Cells with at least one TRX with TCH assign efficiency % < 90% and TCH allocated > 200, and that
belongs to BSC 1 - object type CELL, filter object type = TRX, Children "At least one child", use
one criteria only with "AND" between the two indicators conditions.
4. TRX with TRX PREF MARK = 0 and belongs to cells which have more than 3 TRX - object type TRX,
1st filter object type = TRX, use one criteria "TRX PREF MARK = 1". 2nd filter, filter object type =
CELL, use one criteria "Design/ Cell Capacity/ TRX NUMBER > 3".
5. TRX with less than 1 erlang per day- object type TRX, filter object type = TRX, use one criteria.
6. GPUs from BSC 1 and BSC 2 – Object type = GPU, filter object type = GPU, and in "topology", on
the right panel, find the BSC NAME. Use a criteria such as "BSC=1 OR BSC=2"
Close the Zone Editor, and find your Zones in NPO – they'll be located in OBJECT ZONE, in CELL ZONE
(if object type = CELL) and in TRX ZONE (if object type = TRX). To display them, perform a "refresh
tree" (Edit / Refresh / Active Mode or Active Tree…. The families are used only in OBJECT ZONE, and
choose the upper tab "Family".
"Compute" each zone – right click on a zone… compute.
How many NE's for each zone ?
Hourly "Alc_Mono_QoS" for BSC 1, starting from yesterday 00:00 until now (Mono Object Evo
Report)
Do you see a difference when doing it from "BSS mode" or from "Cell zone" ? – normally, there
is a difference : the BSS mode continues until now, but the cell zone stops at midnight : no
data are available for today. It looks like it is the opposite from RNO. To be verified. "Bug" (?)
is reported to Lucien Champion.
Display RTCH duration avg, RTCH assign success, TRX RTCH Drop Rate (Radio, HO and BSS) for all
TRX with less than 1 erlang / day (Tabular Spreadsheet) – drag and drop the TRX zone into the
TRX mode.
Using Filters, can you find TRXs with high CDR, high amount of success and short duration
average ?
Extract a report containing all parameters related to cell reselection, for all cells of a BSC, for
yesterday
Use the legend to compare operationnal settings with reference settings
Is there a discrepancy ? – in the legend menu, choose source:operational , target:reference
Select and propagate cells with discrepancies – use the legend menu "SELECT" red & yellow cells.
Select and propagate parameters with discrepancies – find the parameters which are red or
yellow coloured. (orange = a change of value occured), click on the column header, and choose
"propagate selected functions". This will propagate the selected parameters in the upper
window.
Check all changes on all cells of a BSC – use the Events to do this. Ensure to choose the "daily"
periodicity.
Check the details for one event – right click on one "symbol" and choose "event details"
Check that all "cell reselection" parameters follow the reference values – this exercise will be used
to perform a "fake" tuning session later.
Change a reference and observe the changes – this is the exercise title. Create few groups of
trainees, and step-by-step :
Export the GSM B10 Parameter Reference Values
( …)
Check all rules related to HO – PWRCTRL DETECTION – select the whole family
Execute these rules for all cells in one BSC
Is there any rule which is red or orange ? – use highlight
Select/Propagate only this rule – left click then right click on the header, propagate selected
functions.
Check its properties – in the rules tab, right click "properties" on the rule to check the
formula expression used.
Expression :
Execute this selected rule for all cells in the BSC
Select all cells which are red or orange
Propagate the selection
How many cells do not follow the rule ? Answer :
Select all parameters linked to this rule
Execute the selection of cells and parameters
Compare their operationnal & reference values
Does it follow the reference ? this shows that the rule indeed is using the operational
values and is much quicker than a visual check !
It is faster than doing manually, especially when modifying the HO MARGIN / L RXLEV CPT HO !!
To export to the OMC-R, you need a connection btw OMC-R and NPO, and you need the Tuning
license activated in NPO.
In OMC-R : IconBox, choose "NPO Tuning Browser", import the last NPO session and save it in a PRC
directory. Then create a new PRC and "populate" it with this PRC directory. Then activate.
Group per group, you will perform the update of the path balance template, accordingly to the
previous slides.
Activation : do the same as a tuning session. Once the PRC is executed, the BSC contains the correct
RMS template. Now a second PRC is needed in order to activate this template on the cells (this is a
cell parameter, very simple, do it with "edit n cells")
Select one cell and use the Adjacency wizard to check relations within 400m, and remove
relations with "No Usage" (import in the Tuning Session)
One can see the movement of traffic in the network… Morning trip to work, lunch time, back
home, going to party, going to football stadium, etc. Useful to predict HO's and LU's.
Create a favorite with all "diag-activated" QoS Indicators located in the family "QoS > Main"
Execute this tabular view for yesterday
"Highlight" the view
Execute a diagnosis on one of the "red" value
Verify one of the results of the diagnosis
Straight forward…
Conclusion : optimization is distributing the work to other teams. A situation that actually requires
parameter changes is rather rare… (compared to other problems)

a BSC "tabular view" report with all these information is not possible. You must create many reports
and then assemble them in excel. The last one is a GPU report…
Max Congestion on Ater PS interface is a GPRS GPU indicator in :
GPRS Ater
GCH
GPRS_GPU_Ater_cong_percent ( QAGALCTP )
GPRS_GPU_Ater_cong_max_percent ( QAGALCTP_MA )
GPRS_GPU_Ater_cong_time ( QAGALCTT )
Create a topology classification based on the free fields "PROVINCE" and "CITY" (CITY is under
PROVINCE)
Follow same procedure as described in the Classification slides. In the right panel, choose the Free
fields…
TABULATION are used just for reading comfort !! don't use [tab] in your files !!
Check : is BTS an existing object ? in BTS mode, open properties of one BTS : is there an object ID ?
