Assignment 2

EEE 6307

Consider a synchronous generator supplying real power, Pt = 1.0 p.u and reactive power, Qt = 0.2
p.u at with terminal with voltage Vt = 1.05 p.u as shown in figure 1. The generator is connected to
an infinite bus system having voltage Vb through a transmission line having reactance XL = 0.5 p.u.
The machine parameters (in p.u except otherwise stated) are given as follows:

Parameter Value Parameter Value

H 2.0 D 3.0
Xd 1.6 Xq 0.8
Xd/ 0.6 Tdo/ 4 sec.
f 50 hz. Vref (= Vt) 1.05

Figure 1
The generator is equipped with an IEEE DC1A exciter as shown in figure 2. The equivalent gain
(K) and time constant (T) of the exciter are 100 and 0.02, respectively.

Figure 2
1. Develop the fourth order linearized state space model for the system and obtain the A and
B matrices.
2. Calculate the numerical values of constants K1-K6.
3. Calculate the eigenvalue of the A matrix and comment on the stability of the system.
4. Solve the fourth order system using numerical (Euler) method and obtain the time domain
response for t = 5.0 sec. Consider sampling time Δt = 0.001 sec. For generating system
dynamics, apply a mechanical torque input ΔTm = 0.1 p.u at time t = 1.0 sec.
5. Is your time domain response supporting the eigenvalues analysis of step 3?
