INTRODUCTION-------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to a characters guide for Suikoden V. Considering that this game is

essentially a matter of playing Pokemon for all the random shopkeepers and
passers-by who just happen to be Stars of Destiny, this is essentially a list
of all the recruitable characters and how to get them, listed in chronological
order of availability. This guide is based on the Japanese version of the game.
The purpose of this FAQ is for checking missing characters, for the most part,
since it's an awful lot of hassle going over every single town and dungeon
after every major event with a fine-toothed comb. I may, if I have the time,
throw in combat/stat details at some point, but for now it's just a list of
how to get the characters.
The usual disclaimers apply: I'm fishing romanizations and translations out of
in-game text, but use my own translations when there aren't any. I don't own
the artbook and therefore have nothing on the official translations if there
were any. Phrases, locations etc are for the most part translated literally,
though I have taken a few liberties to convey approximate meaning without
having results 20 words long that wish they were written in kanji. This
guide assumes knowledge of Japanese. I'm probably not going to update the
names and so forth when the English version is released since I won't be
playing the English version.
And of course, as with any FAQ, this is chock-full of spoilers, so read at your
own risk. I've tried to leave out specific detail on plot, but reference to
major events is kind of inevitable.
This FAQ is copyright to myself; you may repost it elsewhere as long as it's
posted unaltered in its entirety and credit is given. The lastest version of

SECTION 2: BASIC INFORMATION

Basic information on how events and timing work.
-TIMING------------------------------------------------------------------------
Essentially, when a character's join condition is "after a certain event", the

event isn't considered completed until you go back to base and report in in
the council chamber. For instance, after finishing the Battle of Relkar, you
can't get any characters' events to occur until after you finish reporting in.
The game also keeps track of time - sometimes an event requires that you wait
awhile before advancing to the next step. In this case, just go poke around or
do other events and then come back later.
Note that you can't start collecting characters until after the first battle at
Rainwall after escaping Sol Falena, so don't worry about it in the prologue
parts of the game. You'll know you're in the prologue because combat at that
stage is a cakewalk due to the various Queensguard members who're always
tagging along.
There are a number of ways timing and choice wise to get the various
characters. The descriptions in this guide are essentially the ones for getting
a character as soon as they're available. There are different choices and
timing you can follow to get them as well, and as the game is rather long I
haven't had time to go test all of that.
Also, some characters require events to be completed awhile before they

actually join. The ones to watch out for are: Oboro, Muraad, Kirie.
-CHOICES-----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're trying to just get people to join, normally it works to just be frank
about it and simply keep asking them. However, picking a different choice
sometimes initiates different events. Generally speaking it's not possible to
screw up choices so that someone doesn't join - you can usually find them
later. After a certain amount of time passes or a major event, you can usually
ask them again. There are of course exceptions to this rule.
Like most RPGs, it pays to be a busybody and stick your nose into everyone's
business. It also pays to be persistent, as there are characters who will only
join you after you've nagged them repeatedly as the game progresses.
-OBORO'S AGENCY----------------------------------------------------------------
After you get Oboro, you can use his agency to check background on characters
who have already joined and find characters who haven't yet (though you'll need
to have met them at least once first). Sometimes a character seems like they
should appear in a location and they're not; in this case, investigating their
whereabouts through Oboro will sometimes get them to appear.

Getting certain character combinations triggers events such as the letter box
and bathhouse. Depending on the timing at which you acquire various characters,
you may or may not be able to see these sub events (it's not always ideal to
acquire characters as soon as they're available).

recruiting.

CONDITIONS: Conditions for getting the character to join. Omitted for plot
characters.

Plot characters will join you automatically and you don't really have to worry
about them. They're usually pretty good in combat and won't die in warfare, but
sometimes it's possible to lose them during events.

Non-plot characters can be picked up at will once you've met the conditions and
timing for them. Note that if their regiment is defeated in warfare, there's a
chance that these characters will die.

NOTES: Raven's Crow Rune allows him to evade all single target physical
attacks, but only works indoors.

go to Haswaal's room in the temple

path (you can replace Takam, since Ulda/Isato serve the same
function) and return to your HQ.

to help her in her trial.
3) proceed to the room where Jean removed something from the
sealed tomb, and descend into the dungeon. At the end, you'll
fight a large boss (not terribly hard, especially if you have
the earth spell ). Eresh joins you after the fight.
NOTES: 1) Eresh shares the same Star as Yuram. If you get Eresh, you
cannot get Yuram later.
2) Eresh is equipped with a Blue Gate Rune and an Exorcism Rune,
neither of which is removable.

NOTES: 1) note that if you don't go to Harshbill prior to visiting
Sauronix/Forest of Twilight, you won't be able to get there
again until after the entire mess with Armess. It's very easy
to miss Kathary.

Ruins next to your HQ.
NOTES: Kirie will only be in Agate prior to the Queen's campaign.

wine, and he'll mention Harshbill.
2) go to Harshbill, and check the bottom left warehouse at the
docks to witness Log dealing with Haleth
3) wait awhile and return to Harshbill. When you enter the office
and talk to the guy who's standing where you normally find
Haleth, he'll tell you that Haleth's escaped.
4) to your HQ, in fact. You'll find him in the bar of HQ, where
you can ask him to join.

Characters who're not part of the 108 Stars. The Do-re-mi sprites are bonus
characters who can't equip runes, skills, weapons, or armor other than
accessories, but gain very good defensive stats as they level. They're
recruitable via Cornelio's special rune if you have an extra slot in your
party (including inactive party members). The encounters are random across
certain areas, but if you kill it instead of capturing it it will appear again.
Note that the various colored Do-re-mi sprites around the Lordlake area are
not recruitable.

SECTION 6: FAQ

1) What do you get for collecting all 108 stars?
The best ending(s). Whacky hijinks.

2) Do characters who fall in wars come back?
No, they don't. And sometimes other characters will leave. Any non-plot
character has a chance of dying in warfare if their troop is annihilated. It
doesn't appear to be possible to kill plot characters this way - they'll just
retreat from the battlefield.

3) Can you lose characters in other ways?
Generally speaking once a character joins they're there to stay unless

you get them killed in warfare. However, if you choose to defend your home
fort during the attack by Armess, you'll lose Roy and be unable to complete
the 108 Stars. Similarly, if you allow Belcoot/Ryhalt/Zegai etc to duel
Gilderick and lose, the character will die rather than having you Continue.
You'll also lose Sayalise to an event, but she's not one of the 108 and
there's no way around it.
4) Are there characters who become unavailable after the story advances to a
certain point?
Yes. Of note are Muraad, Oboro (and related characters), Nakura & Sagiri,
Takam, Kirie, Haleth, and Kathary. In particular, Nakura & Sagiri are easy to
miss because the window for recruiting them is quite short, as are Haleth
and Kathary.
5) A character's joined but they're not available in the roster when trying
to switch party members.
Probably because they're involved in the next major event. Characters such as
Sayalise, Kyle, Shigure & Sagiri etc are sometimes unavailable when they're
busy with plot. Roy stays unavailable for a pretty long while towards the end
of the game.
6) What characters are good in combat?
Depends largely on what Runes you have. A Boost/Strength/Blade Rune can make
just about anybody a decent fighter, while any magic Rune + Drain Magic will
make a decent mage.
That said, the game's built-in I Win Buttons are George, Ryhalt, and Zerase,
as they've got better stats than anybody else of their character type and
highly useful Runes to boot.
For most of the game you'll have the prince and Rion, both quite good mid-
range fighters. Once you acquire the Drain Magic Rune, put one on your mage
(Zerase, Jean, Levi etc) and one on your healer (hybrid character with good
MP progression, there's about two dozen of these, take your pick), and blast
away.
Ryhalt and George are the best frontline fighters by far, although George may
suffer in boss battles due to his low magic defense. Belcoot, Dain, Hazuki,
or Shigure are also quite decent.
For M/L range fighters, you can usually safely equip them with a Strength
Rune as they're less likely to get attacked. Kirie, Sagiri, and Kathary are
all pretty good L range fighters.
For mages you'll probably want to find ones with at least an A in the type
of magic you want them to use, though you can boost that with accessories. L
or M range weapon and good speed a plus, but the most important thing is that
they've got the right hand Rune slot free so you can give them Drain Magic.
Healing magic in this game heals fixed amounts regardless of the caster's
magic power, so really you can use anybody with a decent amount of MP.
Ideally you want a hybrid character (Kyle, Miakis, Lorelai etc) who can
equip 3 Runes and whose damage output isn't dependent on their MP so they've
got something to do when you're not in need of healing.
If you really have problems you could always make a tank with Firefly and
Wall Runes, though I've never really found that to be necessary, especially
if you equip your frontliners with Drain Runes or the Eyeball Ring.
Really, the combat in Suikoden isn't terribly hard or complicated, and you
can just go make a party of whatever characters you happen to like.

7) Why are certain characters available in regiment formation and not others?
You can use most characters in warfare. However, only certain characters can
be troop leaders, while others must be support. Usually leaders can also be
support, but support characters can't be leaders. There's also a difference
between the 2nd and 3rd slots - usually completely non-combatant characters
such as the doctors, Sairou & Shinrou, Lucelina etc can only be placed into
the third slot.
Each regiment can have up to two types of skills, and order of priority is
assigned via character order in the regiment, so if all three members have
different skills you won't be able to use the third member's skills. Usually
each character has 1 use of their skill, but certain characters have 2.
As hinted in the tutorial, magic-type abilities can only be used by Rune

Archer and Rune Bowship regiments, with the sole exception being the
protagonist.
You cannot use the Do-Re-Mi sprites, Genou or Byakuren in warfare. Beaver
regiments are amphibious but fight poorly on land; in water they're strong
against everything. You can only put Beaver characters into Beaver
regiments.
Similarly, Dino regiments are strong against everything in water and count
as cavalry on land. They move faster than Beavers, but again you can only
put Dino Knights into Dino regiments.

8) How many endings are there?
2 good endings (require all 108 Stars), 2 normal endings (split based on how
many characters you've collected and story choices), 7 bad endings.

9) 7 Bad Endings?
Usually you're given the choice to Continue if your party is defeated in war
or combat. However, there are certain points where it'll just skip you to the
Bad Ending or Gameover. These points are:
>Agreeing to Salm's proposal in Rainwall

>Losing the duel vs Roy at the bandits' hideout
>Losing any of the 3 boss fights immediately after the Queen's campaign. You
get separate Bad Endings (?) depending on which party lost.
>Losing the duel vs Gizel (just Gameover)
>Losing the duel vs Gilderick as Roy, if you chose to defend HQ

10) What's the clear save file?
You get bonuses for starting the game over on a game clear save. It allows you
to keep the following:
>group SP
>money
>items in inventory and storage (except for event items and the Sun gear set)
>option items such as the various frame, voice, music sets (the treasure chests
will contain money if you already have the item)
>formation and skill manuals (ditto treasure chests turning into money)
>list of items sold in the various stores around HQ (not
including certain trade items)
>the pieces you've won in Eggbart's minigame
In addition, you retain the protagonist's name and can use George in the final
battle. Character kill counts (relevant to being able to equip certain pieces
of gear) are not retained. Note that Runes/equipment that are actually
equipped on characters are not carried over, and neither is personal SP, so
you may want to de-equip useful items and convert all personal SP to group SP
prior to clearing the game.
Additional bonuses allow you to use Dash without Kathary in the party, from
the very beginning, and you can listen to Cornelio's music test without
collecting the Do-Re-Mi sprites.
