Introduction

Good Morning and welcome to our Year 5 Gold Mass, in the 29th Week of Ordinary Time. In
today’s First Reading, we hear how wisdom is an important part of life and can guide us in
making decisions. Today, as we celebrate the Eucharist, let us be mindful of the gifts God has
given us. Please stand for our opening hymn, ‘We are Called’.

Opening Hymn: ‘We are Called’ by David Haas

1. Come! Live in the light! Shine with the joy and the love of the Lord!
We are called to be light for the kingdom, to live in the freedom of the city of God! (R)

Refrain: We are called to act with justice. We are called to love tenderly.
We are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God.

2. Come! Open your heart! Show your mercy to all those in fear! We are called to be hope for
the hopeless, so all hatred and blindness will be no more! (R)

that, always pondering spiritual things,
we may carry out in both word and deed
that which is pleasing to you.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading: Sirach 4:11-19

A reading from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Wisdom brings up her own sons,

and cares for those who seek her.
Whoever loves her loves life,
those who wait on her early will be filled with happiness.
Whoever holds her close will inherit honour,
and wherever he walks the Lord will bless him.
Those who serve her minister to the Holy One,
and the Lord loves those who love her.
Whoever obeys her judges aright,
and whoever pays attention to her dwells secure.
If he trusts himself to her he will inherit her;
and his descendants will remain in possession of her;
for though she takes him at first through winding ways,
bringing fear and faintness on him,
plaguing him with her discipline until she can trust him,
and testing him with her ordeals,
in the end she will lead him back to the straight road,
and reveal her secrets to him.
If he wanders away she will abandon him,
and hand him over to his fate.

Gospel: Mark 9:38-40

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

John said to Jesus, 'Master, we saw a man who is not one of us casting out devils in your
name; and because he was not one of us we tried to stop him.' But Jesus said, 'You must not
stop him: no one who works a miracle in my name is likely to speak evil of me. Anyone who
is not against us is for us.'

HOMILY
Prayer of the Faithful

Fr Peter: Gathered together in Christ as members of the St Joseph’s School community, let
us call to mind God’s many blessings and ask Him to hear the prayers which He himself
inspires us to make.

1. We pray for our Church. We pray for Pope Francis, our Archbishop Timothy
Costello, bishops and priests everywhere, especially Fr Peter, may they be given
wisdom and inspiration. May their leadership empower us to be effective witnesses of
the Gospel and its message of hope to our world. We pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, hear our prayer

2. We pray for our school and parish community, and all members of the Church, that
they be blessed because they hear God’s words and live them out. We pray to the
Lord.

3. We pray for wisdom as we celebrate the present, and honour the past. Grant us the
courage and confidence to continue our quest for truth and purpose in our lives. We
pray to the Lord.

4. God’s message is about practice and to believe the promises that have been made.
May we acknowledge our God as Lord of the universe by living in the faith of God’s
power to bring about God’s purpose for us. We pray to the Lord.

5. We pray for the sick and suffering Lord. Help them to regain hope and strength. We
pray to the Lord.

6. We pray for all those who have died, especially those in our school and parish
community. May they share in God’s everlasting glory always. We pray to the Lord.

Fr Peter: Lord may we turn to you and serve you with all our hearts. With confidence
we have asked your help: May we now know your mercy and love in our lives. We
ask this through Christ our Lord.
