BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards:

 (Kindergarten.) Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., note
places at school that are colorful)
2. Objectives:
SWBAT –
 Students will identify and compare the activities in the story with their personal
experiences.
3. Materials/Equipment:
 Book Tom goes to Kindergarten
 Old cloth
 Old shoes
 Paint
 Paper
 sandbox
4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book.
 Start by showing the cover of the book and ask the students what they see on the cover,
read the title of the book and tell the student to predict what the story is going to be
about. Asked them if they remember their first day in kindergarten and asked them to share
a little bit. Start reading the book, stop after tom and her mom got home, asked them if
they go for a walk with their family. Continue reading and stop after tom was a creature
from outer space, asked the student to share a little bit of their pretending game. Continue
reading and stop after he meet his teacher, asked students by the show of hand to tell how
many of them where excite in their first day at kindergarten (it will be a great book to read
in their first week of school). Asked them if they remember who came with them to their
first day of kindergarten. predict with the students what will happened next in the story.
Continue reading and stop after and wouldn’t let go and discuss how they think Tom feel
when Tom’s parent was about to left. Continue reading and stop after reading about the
activities that they did. Asked student to tell what activities they did so far in kindergarten
and what activities they would like to do. Continue reading and stop after tom family did
not want to left, and asked them how they parents are like Tom’s parents. continue reading
and finished the book. After reading the book ask them what they like about the book.
Discuss what animals are in the story. Discuss the activities list on the book and asked
them if they have done any of the before, asked them if they like or not and why.
B. Extension activity:
 Asked the students by the show of hand which activity do they like the most, record the
result in the board. asked the students that like the sand box activity to stand up and get
into a group, then group up the ones that prefer the dress-up corner, then the ones that
like the painted activity. Show the students the dress up area and asked students that show
that activity to go to that station, then do the same with the other two. When students are
in each of the station asked them to share with the class what can they do in that station,
help students by naming others activities that they can do in the different stations. Explain
the students that will all have to play in each station that after 10 to 15 minutes we will
change station so everyone can play and have a great time.

5. Closure:
 Share with the class which acidity did they enjoy the most.
