BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards:

 With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.
(kindergarten)

2. Objectives:
SWBAT -
 Students will describe the celebration that the story is describing by looking at the picture.
 Students will compare their own celebration with the one in the story.

3. Materials/Equipment:

 Color paper
 Scissors
 Ruler
 Glue
 Glitter
 Stapler
 Chinese egg rolls.

4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book
 Show the cover of the book and ask students what they see on the cover, discuss a little
bit about the illustration and colors use on the cover. Read the tittle, ask students to
predict what the story why be about and what will happen. Read the first and second
pages and stop, ask student by the show of hand if they know what is the lunar new year,
discuss a little bit what it is (read the author’s note at the end of book it describes what the
lunar new year is). Keep reading, red the next pages and stop ask students if they have
ever heard about the Chinese New Year and explains that is the same thing. Keep reading
and stop after reading about the lady from Singapore, ask students if they have ever
celebrated Chinese New Year and how they celebrate. Continue reading and stop after
reading about the luck, ask children what they know about luck, and ask they if they do
something to have good like. Keep reading and stop after he said that soon he will have
new clothes, ask students what they do to get prepare for new year and/or Chines New
Year. Keep reading and stop after it talks about the long strings of firecrackers, ask
students if they have seen one before, how it looks like, is the same as the one show in the
illustration. Continue reading and finished the book, discuss with the class what the story
was talking about, ask them if they know from what culture is this celebration, discuss
how do we celebrate Chinese New Year. Ask students what traditions and celebrations do
they have at home, what they love about their traditions. Discuss what activities the
character does in the story.
B. Extension activity:
1. After the discussion show the picture of the Chinese lanterns that the illustration on the
book shows, ask students if they know what they are, discuss what a Chinese lantern is.
Show the students the material and tell them that we will make our own Chinese lantern.
Students will seat in the tables about 3 to 4 students so everyone can have enough space
for the activity. Call at each table so in order each student will have the opportunity to
pick the color paper that they want, they will have the choice to pick between the paper
that have lines that they children will cut or make them the lines with help and support.
Each student will get scissor and glue, if they want, they can get glitter. When everyone
has the materials show them how they will cut the paper, cut through the line so it can be
easier for everyone. After all of them have cut the paper, show them that we will loop the
paper around to form a tube, then we will join the sort ends with glue, after they glue
them, I will staple it or they can do it with teacher help. Students can add glitter if they
want.

5. Closure:
 each child will share their work with two or three classmates.
