WAF is pleased to announce that following the success of the WAF Berlin Tour Programme, we have
created a bespoke Amsterdam tour offering for WAF 2018. Amsterdam has a unique architectural
landscape, allowing us to tap into the its magnificent architectural heritage, first-class contemporary
buildings and the vibrant architectural scene across the Netherlands. This year, WAF presents the
best art spaces and most intriguing building projects, exciting protagonists and iconic locations.

Tour places are inclusive in the Premium Plus Delegate Pass and accommodation package. Why not

Once your pass is booked, our Customer Care team will be in contact to confirm which tour you would
like to attend. Tours will be available to book onto on a first come first served basis and spaces are
limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
OPTION 1 - AMSTERDAM'S CENTRAL WATERFRONT
This tour will provide a great insight into the historic and continuing urban development of Amsterdam
and its impressive architecture. The tour will focus on central waterfront which has played an
important role in the development of the city and is now being transformed into a new part of the
cultural city centre. This area has seen a impressive amount of development and currently
accommodates a large variety of high quality projects including infrastructure, commercial, residential,
public, educational and cultural buildings. As part of the tour we can include interior visits of selected
buildings such as the Eye film museum, Music building and the City Library.

Highlights of the tour include:

ODE Island: This ambitious city centre development on former postal office district contains a hotel,
offices, luxury apartments, retail, restaurants, music conservatory and the impressive city library.
Including interior tour of library.
Het Scheepsvaartsgebouw: Old headquarters of the shipping company and one of the most striking
examples of the Amsterdam School architecture movement.
Central Station: The area around the central station is being redeveloped into a modern
infrastructure hub and gateway to the waterfront with many infrastructural projects such as a new
metro line, elevated bus station, innovative bike storages, pedestrian & bike tunnels and the IJhallen
project with new shops and restaurants.
Overhoeks: This area formerly occupied by the offices of Shell just across from the central station is
rapidly turning into one of the main event areas of the city. With the impressive ADAM hotel, club &
creative hub in the former office towers, a new restaurant & music venue in the former Shell canteen.
Eye Filmmuseum: This cultural building on the waterfront serves as an icon for the redevelopment
North of Amsterdam, designed by Delugan + Meisll. Including interior.
IJdock: High density mixed-use development on a purposely built new island in the central
waterfront. This island features a hotel, luxury apartments, water police headquarters and new law
courts all in a spectacular masterplan with the most striking architecture.
OPTION 2 - AMSTERDAM'S EASTERN DOCKLANDS
This tour will provide a great insight into the successful transformation of the eastern docklands in to a
much loved housing area. These man made harbour islands have each been given a unique
character through innovative master-plans by famous Dutch architects and accommodate a wide
range of innovative housing typologies, cultural buildings and bridges. The tour will provide an
overview of the most interesting projects in the different areas as well as the history and planning,
specific Dutch policies on (social) housing and their relation to the squatter movement.

Highlights of the tour include:

Merchants Quay: Linear development along a former harbour island with a row of old warehouses
which have been partially re-used and redeveloped into offices, commercial and cultural facilities
including the Music Building by 3XN.
Java Island: This former harbour island was redeveloped to accommodate new canals with modern
canal houses, large blocks with landscaped communal gardens, sculptural bridges and a wide range
of dwelling types.
KNSM Island: Interesting mix of redeveloped old harbour buildings and large scale modern city
blocks. Including the impressive "Pireaus" building by Hans Kollhoff.
Lloyd hotel: This impressive building accomodated an immigration hotel, prison and artist colony and
a has now been transformed into a 1 to 5 star hotel and cultural embassy through a provocative
interior re-design by MVRDV that incorporates all the historical layers within the building. Including
interior tour.
Borneo & Sporenburg: These former harbour peninsulas were transformed into an attractive low-
rise, high density housing district according to a famous master-plan by West 8. The area
accommodates many new housing typologies, eye-catching single family homes by architects such as
MVRDV and spectacular bridges.
Funen Park: This quiet living oasis and completely car free neighbourhood was built next to one of
Netherlands's busiest train lines. The area is carefully planned as a communal and public park with a
range of beautiful apartment blocks and town houses including the iconic "wave roof" building by NL
architects.
OPTION 3 - NDSM WHARF & WESTERN DOCKLANDS
The western docklands are one of the most important sites of development within the city and are
currently being transformed in to a high quality city district.This tour will provide a great insight into the
ongoing transformation of the ship building wharf and western docklands. These areas contain a wide
variety of buildings that range from large public buildings to innovative housing developments as well
as inspiring developments by and for the creative sector.

Highlights of the tour include:


Central Station: The area around the central station is being redeveloped into a modern
infrastructure hub and gateway to the waterfront with many infrastructural projects such as a new
metro line, elevated bus station, innovative bike storages, pedestrian & bike tunnels and the IJhallen
project with new shops and restaurants.
NDSM warf: This former ship building wharf to the north of the city centre is being transformed into
Amsterdam's foremost creative hub and "artist breeding ground". The re-development is being led by
a group of artist, architects and former squatters that are creating the most. Amongst others the area
features the longest office building built on a former crane track, a boutique hotel in a 90m tall crane
and a artist city of self built ateliers in a the former dock building. The area also host more than 70
festivals and events per year and can be described as the largest urban playground and laboratory of
the city.
Westerdok: Highest density housing development in the city. Range of apartments on the new
waterfront, with large communal courtyards
IJdock: High density mixed use development on a purposely built new island in the central waterfront.
This island features a hotel, luxury apartments, water police headquarters and new law courts all in a
spectacular masterplan with the most striking architecture.
Silodam: This harbour dam accommodates apartments in renovated grain silos as well as the iconic
Silodam apartment building by MVRDV
Houthavens: These former timber harbours are being redeveloped into a new city district with a
range of collectively developed apartment buildings including "Superlofts" and the impressive
Ponsteiger building.
OPTION 4 - IJBURG
IJburg is a new residential district for 45.000 inhabitants which is being constructed on some of the
largest man made islands in the world. This ambitious plan is designed to have a positive impact on
the local ecology and features an intricate water-management system as well as a nature and
recreation area built on a former industrial garbage dump. The islands each have their own character
and accommodate a variety of innovative housing developments. This tour of will provide an insight
into the master-planning, construction and development of the islands as well as the most interesting
projects on the islands.

Highlights of the tour include:


Floating Houses: This first island of IJburg was designed as a test case for new forms of residential
development. and features a "water neighbourhood" of prefabricated floating houses and custom
designed floating villas.
Noordbuurt: A smaller residential area that combines larger apartment blocks with single family
houses. The area includes the innovative "fire station" houses and a terrace of houses on to a care
free street overlooking the IJ lake.
Zuidbuurt: A large development of owner developed and self build houses that are not bound by
aesthetic regulations. This area showcase a huge variety in architecture and construction methods
including passive houses, timber and straw bale construction. As part of this area there are also a
number of collectively developed housing projects with shared amenities and facilities.
Haveneiland: This largest Island of IJburg and features innovative mixed-use and residential blocks
designed by leading Dutch architects with large variety of semi-public courtyard spaces as well as
new "zoning free" multi-purpose buildings. The island also accommodates the main commercial
centre and artificial harbour.
Rieteilanden & Diemerpark: A series of smaller islands to the south have larger terraced houses
and villas facing directly onto the water. The area functions as a green lung for the entire development
and also features leisure and sport facilities. The former industrial garbage dump to the south of the
islands has been dramatically transforemd into a nature park with the recreational and sports facilities.
OPTION 5 - AMSTERDAM ARCHITECTURE BOAT TOUR
This custom boat tour provides a great opportunity to view the best contemporary architecture from
the perspective of the water. As most of Amsterdam's buildings are built on the waters edge this tour
will allow participants to obtain a overview of the most important developments in the city including the
city centre, central waterfront and eastern docklands.

Highlights of the tour include:

OPTION 6 - AMSTERDAM SCHOOL, PLAN ZUID & MUSEUM PARK
This tour will provide an insight into the very influential architecture movement of the Amsterdam
School. The tour will also incorporate the museum park which accommodates the most important
museums of the city, which have recently been renovated or extended.

Highlights of the tour include:


Plan Zuid: This southern extension of the city was built a the beginning of the 20th century according
to a master-pln by by the renowned H. P. Berlage and is the best example of a housing area in
Amsterdam School style
Dageraad: Social housing scheme designed by Michel de KlerkPiet Kramer and two of the main
proponents of the Amsterdamse School. The housing block is regarded as one of the aesthetic
highlights of the movement
Stedelijk Museum: Muncipal museum for temporary art which was given an impressive extension on
to the museum park according to a design by Benthem Crouwel architects
Rijskmuseum: Magnificent nation al museum originally designed by Pierre Cuypers. The building
was reopened after a complete renovation that includes an impressive subterranean entrance hall by
Spanish architects Cruz y Ortiz.

Please note that entry into the museums is not included in the tour
OPTION 7 - ZUIDAS
The Zuidas is the new international business district to the south of city centre with impressive
collection of office towers and apartment buildings designed by world renowned architects. The
district also accommodates housing, high quality spaces, facilities and restaurants. The Zuidas is the
largest development area in Amsterdam with 225 Hectare and a projected real estate area of 4,2
million m2 and estimated completion by 2040.

Highlights of the tour include:


WTC / Zuid plein: The first project area of the Zuidas includes the renovated World Trade Centre that
accomodates the Zuidas project office which provides an overview of the entire project with a large
masterplan model.
Mahler4: One of the first project areas to be completed in the overall master-plan. This zone features
amongst others office towers designed by Toyo Ito, Vinoly, Un Studio and Eric van Egeraat.
Gershwin: An zone that accommodates predominately housing inlcuding the Miles building by KCAP
and the award winning apartment building by SeARCH.
The Edge: Classified as the most sustainable office building in the world, The Edge is a 40.000m2
office building that is packed with a multitude of technological innovations that have lead to it being
dubbed a computer with a roof.

Please note that entry into office spaces is not included in the tour.
