This project I lead a small team from initial site analysis to the completion of construction
documents of a 4,300sqm redevelopment of the 4th floor of the Birds Nest Stadium in Beijing.
The brief was to design exclusive ‘Private Members Club’ including a Chinese restaurant,
bar, library, seminar rooms and a series of other functions. It had to be constructed to
highest of standards and have a modern design fitting of the prestige of the building. Our
initial concept was to insert into the design a new order, distinctively separate from the
iconic existing building and therefore not competing but rather working in harmony.
The Building began on site prior to me leaving the office in late 2013 with completion in
2014. The project remains private and as such has not been photographed publicly.

HANGZHONGMEN OFFICE
EXH DESIGN
I was given the task of developing the interior of an existing ‘Min Gou’ Style Building from
the1930’s. The client wanted to create a new executive office that did not compete with the
surrounded listed buildings. I tried to incorporate much of the traditional style and tone of
the buildings origin, which I then integrated with a more modern design philosophy. This
was a fast paced project, which I lead from initial concept to completion. We finished all
design and documentation in under one month, construction took another two months.

BRUNEI RETREAT
EXH DESIGN
The Brunei Retreat was the conversion of a series of existing summer villas (1200m2) on
the edge of Nanjing into a spa and banqueting retreat. The design brief was to imbue the
traditional spirit of Chinese architecture whilst creating a high level of modern comfort. I
took elements such as traditional Chinese screens and lanterns and created a series of
bespoke designs with a contemporary elegance. This juxtaposition of the traditional and
the modern created a harmony that was distanced from pastiche or a clash of a design
narrative often seen.

The Ci Apartment was a small 49sqm bespoke studio apartment design. The client wanted
the apartment as an infrequently used residence for when on he is on business in Hong
Kong. With a passion for minimalism and art collecting, we were given the brief from the
client to maximize the available space whilst providing ample room for displaying art. We
went through many design options on this apartment, each time further tailoring the fittings
and cabinetry to the clients needs. The project is currently under construction.

The masterplan is a mixed-use development for the headquarters for Gazprom PLC. The
building is envisaged as an organic form consisting of layers of transparent and reflective
surfaces. The Lakhta Centre combines a 462m high ‘skyscraper’ with a 300m long
‘groundscraper’, two forms coming together to create a balanced composition, organic in
nature, inspired by the movement and energy of water, the natural element that led to the
foundation of the city of St Petersburg.
We were given a tight four month time schedule to take this from initial concept to a detailed
design proposal. The tower was already designed as it was part of an approved design on
a prior site. I was involved in the initial design development from concept to the production
of the tender package for the base buildings and tower. I took a lead role in aspects of the
wider masterplan lead role in aspects and the final report.

STUDENT WORK
The concept stems from the urbanism theories of grid and fow. When considering the
current geography of the Waverley Valley there is a natural flow down the valley; this be-
comes entwined with the grid of the old and new towns. This model is a culmination of
studies on the natural flow and the imposed grid of the site. The model shows a jigsaw of
blocks which formed the basis for the design of the master plan.

MAIN AXIAL ROUTES
The main routes of the center of the Edinburgh; The Royal Mile and Princess
Street are traversed by the North and South Bridge. All of the Main cultural
buildings are tied to these routes. This creates the Waverley Valley Not
Only a Green Heart on the city but also a possible secondary pedestrian
axis, extending from Princes Street Gardens and Connecting the Proposed
cultural buildings in the masterplan.
The focus of the masterplan is the green corridor extending from Princess
Street Gardens. This creates a new form of street-scape largely lacking the
old town of Edinburgh, with little priority currently given to pedestrians and
open space. This axis has a very active street front and is accessed from
the Royal Mile through the revitalization of the closes. With inviting views
and activities continuing through the transitional space, the closes draw
people to the green corridor of Market Street.
DEVELOPMENT
The Traditional ‘Fish-bone’ structure of the Royal Mile creates long ‘rig’
housing plots running down the valley, I think this provides a unique
opportunity to not only retain the peculiarities of Closes and the density of
a medieval city, but also an opportunity to provide a developer to vary the
streets-cape through parceling of the land into strips.

STUDENT WORK
The European Kunsthalle was initiated in 2005 under the guise of an Art Institution without
a set portfolio. It is a branch of the ‘Eurpean Society for Contemporary Art’ which, itself, is
funded from the European Union Cultural Department. It has remained without a physical
location allowing it to become a discursive platform. The focus of which is the re-imagining
the role of a ‘Kunsthalle’ in contemporary art in particular with concepts of permanence
and site specificity in displaying work (European Kunsthalle, 2010)
Despite existing in such an unstable model The European Kunsthalle quickly became noted
for its innovative exhibitions and its publications. It incorporated the idea of ‘European’ as
a collaborative process within art and embraced a healthy diversity in contemporary art
practices. It is currently looking for funding for a permanent home.
The identity of The European Kunsthalle as an artistic forum was central to its establishment,
and for this reason Berlin would be perfect for such an institution. Centric for much of the
emerging contemporary art in Europe, Berlin is undoubtedly the youthful side of art today.
As a public entity it seeks to remain visible and open to both the art community and the
general public. It would be set up under a cooperation structure, yet through collaborations
with institutions and initiatives from various cultural production and mediation contexts
both locally and internationally with Kunsthallen, museums, festivals, artist-in-residency
and curatorial programs, academies, universities and art magazines. It would be a hub,
growing and shrinking across the building, the city and Europe in response to each program
displayed yet at all times orchestrated from its home in Berlin.

BLACKHALL MOSQUE
STUDENT WORK
The basis for this project is to increase the site density and re arrange the sites existing use.
It currently is used by a mosque with some shops and suburban housing. The use of the site
presently is not best suited its needs; the Queensferry Road has increased substantially in
traffic volume and projects built in recent times along this radial route have been smaller,
higher density, apartments opposed the existing single and two story bungalows. My plan
was to increase the density, as with other likewise projects, but try and retain the existing
block street plan. I also wanted to keep as much of the site as green as was currently the
case, and in truth I extended the total amount of green space from 53.9% to 60.1%.
The main aim beyond increased density and relation of green space was integrating the
mosque with the surrounding city fabric. The mosque is currently housed in a dilapidated
old church that was not built for purpose; parking often overflows into the surrounding
suburban streets and the buildings orientation does not address the busy junction
successfully. I wanted to position the mosque as the center of the block and to allow it to
be the primary focus whilst relating to the surrounding buildings. .

The lower half of the tower’s program was for the main university such as lecture theaters,
libraries and seminar rooms. Floors 7 to 14 are restricted access and are used for highly
sensitive research. With a vivarium, BSL units and other mechanically intensive equipment
this means the building need three floors of MEP. Floor 6 becomes the dividing belt between
the two elements and allows the MEP to be incorporated into the architectural language.
Yong Loo Lin is the research and teaching facility for the University of Singapore. It is now
completed and as the university places a strong emphasis on biomedical research it will
become the main landmark building for the campus. Hillier was the design architects on
the project and I was part of the team that brought the design development documents to
100% complete.

WINTERGARDEN
HILLIER
The Wintergarden was to form the requirement of Manhattan’s ‘East River Science Park’
masterplan for a public event space. The design allows it to be used daily as a café whilst
allowing the flexibility to accommodate larger events in the evening. It is the centerpiece
of a large landscaped plaza and embraces this with glass curtain walls on three sides. The
finishing was to a high specification and the result is a crisp addition to a street-scape with
a distinct absence of tangable buildings at a human scale.
I joined the project as much of the ‘East River Science Park’ was under construction. The
Wintergarden went through a complete redesign as its budget was substantially reduced.
My involvement was providing construction drawings, dealing with intricate curtain wall
detailing and demonstrating the buildings versatility for client meetings.
