often are unaware of the plight of
the Tibetan civilization and the
refugees, many of whom suffer

Dharamsala. They are constantly

refugees continue to suffer due to

These nuns live in India in very
poor conditions without heat,
adequate food or medical supplies.
Sister Kechog Palmo, founder of
the nunnery, worked closely with
Gandhi and H.H. the Dalai Lama.
She was a close disciple of H.H.
the Gyalwa Karmapa. While living,
she was able to find support for
the nuns but since her death in
1977, the nuns have had great

One reason we chose to use this
newspaper-style catalogue this time
was so that we could afford to
give you more information on a
greater variety of topics including
a little info on what's happening
here in Ithaca. One of the most
exciting events in recent past was
the formation of Gaden Tenzin
Ling study and meditation center.
Snow Lion employees participated
in its organization. Over the past
few years Ithacans have been
blessed by the visits of many
venerable lamas and we hope that
by providing this space for
Dharma practice, that many more
persons will feel welcome to come
to teach or to study with us.
Snow Lion was formed in 1980
to provide a channel for Dharma
literature to English-speaking
peoples all over the world. Ven-
tures like this are only marginally
profitable. Your direct orders to
us make the difference and allow
us to continue to expand our
offerings to you. Also it would

not depend on volunteer help, we
are a very low overhead operation.

Bell & Dorje
Sets
The supreme symbol of the
Vajrayana path are the bell and
dorje (diamond scepter) used by
tantric practitioners. They are
held in the left and right hand
respectively and convey the mys-
tical union of wisdom and compas-
sion. The dorje has five prongs,
four at each end curved around
the central prong symbolizing the
five Buddha families. Lotus petals
decorate the central caps. The
handle of the bell is similar to the
dorje. The bell is composed of an
alloy of several metals and is
decorated with Tibetan syllables,
lotus petals and dorjes. The bell
produces a clear, brilliant tone
that symbolizes the open dimen-

Tenzin, the Chanting Master Ghen
Lobsang Gyatso and six other

participated in this first studio
recording of their ritual chants.
The tape recording was produced
during the 1985 visit of the monks

three notes simultaneously, em-
ploying the technique of one-voice

From November 1985 to Janu-
ary 1986, eight monks from the
Gyume Tantric College performed
their ritual chants before rapt
audiences in the US and Canada.
The monks participated in the
Assembly of World Religions held
in NJ and then began their per-
formance-packed trip under the
sponsorship of Snow Lion Publica-

tions. It is to the credit of Sidney
Piburn, tour director and v. pres.
of Snow Lion, as well as Brad
Whitman (tour manager), and
Glenn Mullin (Canadian pro-
moter), that they were able to
organize a successful tour with
very short advance notice of the
monks' plans to be in the US.
The Gyume Tantric College is
one of two main schools special-
izing in this form of tantric
chanting. Tantric chanting is bene-
ficial for performers and audience
alike. The Gyume monks resonate
a low bass note accompanied by
overtones, or harmonics. The
striking, other-worldly effect has
been termed "one-voice chording."
The monks radiated abundant
warmth, sensitivity, and good

Tibet, as it was prior to the
Chinese invasion, is no more.
Most of the religious culture as it
appeared prior to the 1950s was
destroyed leaving only hints of
what was once one of the most
spiritual societies on Earth. Tibet
is now opening to tourists but
what visitors will not find is the
rugged, mystical land of lost
Tibet. Thousands of beautiful
monasteries flourished on the
mountainsides, filled with several

built in the seventeenth century. It
looms high above Lhasa, the
capital of Tibet standing nineteen
stories tall and containing over a
thousand rooms. On the top floor

Dalai Lama.

KALACHAKRA
RETREAT
Jeff Cox, president of Snow
Lion, attended the Kalachakra
Retreat Camp sponsored by Tibet
House, New Delhi. The Ven.
Doboom Tulku and Tsering
Dakpa were responsible for organ-
izing the successful week-long
event which was led by Lama
Jampel Tenzin, a highly accom-
plished practitioner of Kalachakra.
He resides in Dharamsala, India.
The guru yoga of Kalachakra was
the central practice and Lama
Tenzin's commentary shed tre-
mendous light on the intricacies
of the yoga. A number of western-
ers attended the event—an excel-
lent follow-up to the Kalachakra
initiations given by H.H. the
Dalai Lama.

GADEN TENZIN LING
Gaden Tenzin Ling, a Tibetan
Buddhist meditation center, has
been founded in Ithaca under the
advisory of the Ven. Zasep Tulku
Rinpoche. GTL offers a practice
and study program that covers
sutra and tantra. The center is
dedicated to the long life and
teachings of H.H. the Dalai Lama.
Ven. Zasep Tulku Rinpoche is
the 13th incarnation of the famous
Kagyupa teacher who founded
Zuru Monastery in the Kham
province of Tibet. Rinpoche was
recognized as an incarnation by
high lamas of the Kagyu, Sakya
and Gelug traditions. He studied
and received empowerments from
many renown Gelug and Kagyu
teachers in Tibet and after his
escape from the Chinese he con-
tinued his studies with various
high lamas and later received an
Acharaya degree from the Varanasi
Sanskrit University in India. In
1975, he was sent to Thailand by
H.H. the Dalai Lama where he
practiced vipassana and anapan-
asati in forest temples. In 1976. he
was then requested by Lama
Thubten Yeshe to come to the
Chenrezig Institute for Wisdom
Culture in Australia. He gave
Lam-rim meditation courses and
lectured in several cities. Three
centers were established there
under his advisory. In 1980, he
was appointed as resident Lama
of Gaden Choling in Toronto by
H.H. Ling Rinpoche. He taught
at Naropa Institute during two of
its summer programs, and under
his guidence three other centers
have been formed in Canada.
Gaden Tenzing Ling is the first of
his centers in the USA and we at
Snow Lion and Gaden Tenzin
Ling are very happy to be associ-
ated with this wonderful person.
Members of Snow Lion were
instrumental in the formation of
Gaden Tenzin Ling. Pat Aiello,
the president of the Dharma
center, is the office manager of
Snow Lion. The center is the
natural outgrowth of their efforts
to strengthen the presence of
Dharma in the USA. The center
is located at 120 W. State St.
(Fourth floor), Ithaca, NY 14850.
GTL's new location was con-
secrated this past fall by monks of
the Gyume Tantric College. Zasep
Tulku Rinposhe led a Green Tara
retreat and gave other teachings
in November. He will return again
in April. The center has hosted
many other venerable lamas during
the past year. Notable have been
the monks of the Gyuto Tantric
College, Doboom Tulku Rinpoche,
H.H. Ganden Tri Rinpoche,
monks of Gyume Tantric College
and Gelek Rinpoche. In 1986, we
look forward to the visits of H.H.
the Drikung Kyabgon, head of the
Drikung Kagyu sect, Lati Rin-
poche, Abbot of Ganden Monas-
tery, several visits from Zasep
Tulku Rinpoche, and another visit
from Gelek Rinpoche.
The center is applying for non-
profit tax-exempt status to help
sponsors who wish to support its
on-going activities. In addition to
hosting lamas, offering retreats
and study programs, Gaden
Tenzing Ling hopes to solicit
donations to subsidize much-
needed Dharma publications
through Snow Lion.
The center welcomes lamas and
visitors from all lineages of Tibetan
Buddhism and has planned a very
busy schedule for the next year.
