The Concept of Peace in Islam

Mohd Wahid Noor
Honourable director Syed Muhammad Aman Qadri, invited guest, respected
teacher Maulana Noman Azhari, dr. Faraz and dr. slaman and dear audience
assalamu alaikum.
Today I’m very happy that I got this golden chance to express my views on a
peaceful topic which is the concept of peace in Islam.
There is a common misconception that Islam is a religion of Violence. There is no
basis for this in Islam. Islam a religion of peace. Islam wants peace for its followers
and all the other residents of the world. The Qur’an calls its way ‘the paths of
peace’ (5:16).
In fact the word of Islam which means submission to the will of Allah. And the
root word of Islam is ‘silm’ which itself means peace. So the spirit of Islam is the
spirit of peace. The first verse of the Qur’an breathes the spirit of peace. It reads:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious the Most Merciful.
This verse, which is repeated in the Quran 114 times, clearly shows that the God
of Islam is the God of Mercy and Compassion, and the book of Islam too is the
book of mercy. The people of Islam must also possess the quality of mercy and
compassion; otherwise they could not be true believers.
Dear audience! If you go through the Quran you will find that from most verses,
either directly or indirectly there emanates the spirit of peace. They show the
great importance Islam attaches to such values as Mercy and Compassion. One of
Allah’s names, according to the Qur’an, is As-Salam, which means the Giver of
peace. Moreover the Qur’an states about our beloved prophet ‫وما ارسلناك اال رحمة‬
‫للعالمين‬its mean that we didn’t send you except as a mercy for the entire world.
(21:107)
And there is a verse, which says‫‘ وهللا يدعو الي دار السالم۔‬And Allah calls to the home
of peace.’ (10:25) this means that the destination of Islam is peace. All the
teachings of Islam are oriented towards the goal of peace.
One of the main objectives of our religion is to introduce into the world an
ideology that facilitates the spreading of peace at every level. Spread peace at an
individual level well as social level therefore when a Muslim meets to another
Muslim he says him ‫ السالم عليكم‬peace be upon you so that we can live a

peaceful life with other Muslims and also we can represent a very good and
peaceful image of our religion Islam.
There are many Hadiths on spreading peace and importance of peace in Islam
that Prophet (SAW) did exemplify for us and we should know about them and
should follow the Sunnah of Prophet (SAW) to bring peace and harmony among
Muslims and also to whole mankind. Now I would like to put some of them in
front of you.
Prophet Muhammad sallahu alahi wasallam said which is mentioned in Sunan Ibn
e Majah “O people, spread peace, feed the hungry, and pray at night when
people are sleeping and you will enter Paradise in peace.”
Abu Umamah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon
him, said: collected in Sunan Abu Dawud:
“Truly, the best of the people to Allah are those who begin the greeting of
peace.” (Sunan Abu Dawud 5197)
On the authority of Abu Huraira (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
reported: The Messenger of Allah (SAW), said, reported in Sahih Bukhari:
“You will not enter Paradise until you believe and you will not believe until you
love each other. Shall I show you something that, if you did, you would love each
other? Spread peace among yourselves.”
A true Muslim is the one who truly follows Islam, someone who is at perfect
peace, with himself and with others. As our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
said, mentioned in the Hadith collections of Tirmidhi and Nasai: “A true believer
(mumin) is he from whom people’s lives and wealth are safe.” Allah wants a
Muslim to live in a safe and peaceful environment and to make efforts for the
spread and continuity of peace in society for him and for all others.
A true Muslim should seek to bring others close to him, not to drive them away
from him. This is why the Prophet declared, in a Hadith report incorporate in the
Sahih al-Bukhari: “A perfect Muslim is one from whose tongue and hands
mankind is safe.
These references from the Quran and Sunnah make it clear that peace is the
greatest concern of Islam. The Islamic method is a peaceful method. Islamic
activism is a peaceful activism.
Here I finish my speech with the prayer that may Allah make this world more
peaceful and may we brothers not enemies. Thanks for listening to me.
