Failure of information systems development and computer-based information projects are major

source of problems in the modern era of technology. Researchers are spending substantial amount
of their effort and time to understand the frequently occurring failures in Information systems
development. According to the years of study and research, approximately 50%-80% Information
system projects frequently fail. Actual failure rate is even higher, since many organizations do not
report many failures. These failures are causing catastrophe as expert in Information systems
development are failing to do their jobs. In addition to the common information systems
development challenges, such as budget limitations, inadequate staff, and deadlines, Information
Technology projects also confront modern technology challenges. Based on previous experiences,
probability and expectation of project failure has become very high. Even the well-established
organizations and companies do not guarantee the success of a project and its implementation. The
complication in software, hardware, security risks, ability to exchange and use information,
database integration, and system development all contribute to the failure of project.
The main cause of failure is due to the deficiency of adequate planning. The companies must plan
according to the resources which the project demands, and for the talented and skillful project staff
who can complete the tasks before deadline. The companies must also realistically keep in mind
the time required to create, examine and implement the project’s goals. Without appropriate
planning, supplies, administration and management, the companies are unable to complete projects
on required deadline, budget, or functionality. Most of the IT projects fail because of overly
restricted schedules. So, companies must efficiently plan to meet deadlines. Some of the cause of
delays in information systems development in organizations are:
Disagreement with Sponsors: Problems can rise between sponsors and the project staff when
project is not going according to the planned schedule, and can cause extra delays, as it interrupts
the much-needed trust between them and the working atmosphere.
Poor management: Business owners and sponsors are not aware of the fact that they are
expected to make a significant involvement to the understanding of a project. Projects can be halted
when business owners and sponsors do not actively respond to issues in which their involvement
is necessary. Conflicts can also arise when project staff keep proceeding without consulting the
Business owners.
Incapable staff: Inefficiently trained staffs can cause delays in projects. Technical and practical
knowledge of the project, and skills and knowledge in teamwork play an important role in
information systems development.
Research-based projects: Projects are tough to achieve in which the solution must be invented.
Research also creates large uncertainty. Time and uncertainty of the project solution achieved from
research is unclear. Project progress is frequently halted when it depends on the results of research.
One-solution syndrome: Thinking about ideal one-solution for all and then trying to implement
without knowing its drawbacks and applicability, creates problem for system development.
Companies make it their important agenda to choose the accurate application for a project.
Mismanagement in design: Designs for certain information development project are the most
complex part of the whole project. The absence, poor understanding, and mismanagement of
designs leads to delays in projects. As it requires many continuous modifications throughout its
implementation.
Work burden: Work burden occurs when the project staffs are working on so many projects at
the same time Distributing tasks of many different projects cause a slow performance that lead
projects delays.
Excessive optimistic schedules: Highly anticipated schedules put considerable heavy pressure on
the project staff. The team would eventually be attempting to achieve the planned deadlines. These
attempts lead to messy work and more faults, which cause additional delays. The project
progresses quick, but product will eventually suffer.
IT projects fail because their possibility is too extensive. Projects with broad scope may be
managed in fragments of small projects. Most large IT projects go over budget in a way that very
existence of companies or organizations is threatened. Failure of Information systems development
occurs when a project is not unable to meet its goals or when the level of disapproval with a system
is so high that there is no enough development to withstand it. Project failure may be because of
its incapability to meet requirements of users such as planned budget or completion of task on
time. An information system failure leads to the major loss of finance, customers, incoming
revenues, confidence of project staff and investor’s allegiance, and to commercial embarrassment
and bans in an organization.
Lack of well well-defined and unclear project objectives and goals, which are basic requirements
of information systems project development, lead to the failure of project. Organizations must
clearly state its information system requirement before attempting to introduce a new system.
Miscommunication among project staff and sponsors also causes a failure of development of IS
projects in an organization. As diverse group of people which includes project staff, top
management and users who perform their duties and task to assure the success of project,
implementing a clear system of communication becomes very necessary in an organization.
Communication among project staff and sponsors sort out disagreement regarding requirements
of project’s goals and design decisions. Lack of effective leadership and incompetent management
in an organization results in failure of decisive and effective policy for project development.
Leadership is accountable for coordination and implementation of required goals of IS project.
Organization with poor management is unable to measure development and recognize the vital
risks in time and then lessen them because of its insufficient measurement.
Organization now-a-days also face improper infrastructure and technology which results in
inadequate technological solutions for the development of IS project. There must be a clear
understanding of existing technology and the replacement system in an organization, or otherwise
face failure in implanting the project’s goals project development. Lack of technical competence
in an organization leads to major information system failures, because project staff do not have the
advance solutions which are required by the users or sponsors. Project staff with improper training
make major mistakes due to lack of knowledge of the new technology and system.
Information System failures are constantly disturbing companies or organizations. Both
researchers and experts have tried to evaluate these failures from their research skills and tried to
develop policies for risk control. This challenge which is extremely hard, the journey of struggle
to achieve or develop efficient IS project will definitely be long and risky. Information systems
development and management in the complicated framework can help organization to obtain goals
that are systematic, efficient and stable.
Undoubtedly cost of failure in information system development is very high. Measuring the
amount of the loss in an IT industry shows very high global cost. Most failures in projects are
preventable if companies take necessary steps proper planning. Research shows that most project
failures are more associated to management and staffs than to technology. Spheres of
characteristics of human resources are unspecified while spheres of characteristics of technology
are well-known and specified such as competency and cost.
