Volume/Issue/Page : 8 / 4 / 804-810

Publication Year : 2014

Aim of Study : To make a further contribution to research into the use of natural products as a
corrosion inhibitors suited to our surrounding environment (less pollution).

Summary of Journal

This study used gravimetric analysis. The materials used in this study are Al-Mg-Si
Alloy, seawater, and Natural products ( Natural Honey/NH, Vanillin/VL, tapioca starch/TS ) as
corrosion inhibitors. The procedure is by submersing the specimens ( Al-Mg-Si alloy ) into
seawater for some different durations ( in day ). The researcher gave 4 different treatments to the
specimens. They are by submersing the specimens into seawater without inhibitor, with NH
inhibitor, with VL inhibitor, and with TS inhibitor respectively. And then, the researcher will
compare the rate of corrosion reaction from each treatments. Beside that, the researcher will also
measure the impact of inhibitor concentration to the weight loss (ΔW) of each specimens. This is
called by gravimetric analysis.

When the immersed alloy is not added by corrosion inhibitor, the weight loss is high. The
weight loss increases with an increase in immersion time. But, when the immersed alloy is added
by corrosion inhibitors ( natural honey, vanillin, and tapioca starch), the weight loss reduces..
But the significant change in weight loss reduce is when adding about 200 ppm of corrosion
inhibitor. The result is same among adding of natural honey, vanillin, and tapioca starch.

Discussion : The corrosion process of Al-Mg-Si alloy in seawater could be explained that
actually Al alloy is covered by passive film ( thin layer ). When immersed in seawater (contain
3.5% NaCl and other ions), the passive film is dissolved and penetrated by Chloride ions. Thus,
dissolution of Al substrate occurs and results in corrosion. But, by increasing inhibitor into
submersed alloy, it will reduce the weight loss (ΔW) of immersed alloy and also will reduce the
corrosion rate. The work principle of inhibitors is by forming a surface film on the alloy surface
and blocked the porous layer of alloy.
However, this nature oxide film does not offer sufficient protection against aggressive
anions and dissolution of aluminium substrate occurs when exposed to corrosive solution.
Seawater predominantly consists of about 3.5% of sodium chloride (NaCl) and many other ions.
Chloride ions are very strong and could easily penetrate the passive film. Thus, dissolution of the
aluminium substrate occurs and results in corrosion. The adsorption of the corrosion inhibitor
competes with anions such as chloride. By assuming that the corrosion inhibitor molecules
preferentially react with Al3+ to form a precipitate of salt or complex on the surface of the
aluminum substrate, the anodic and cathodic processes subsequently suppressed by inhibitor
molecules. Thus, this result suggests that the protective film that was formed comprise
aluminium hydroxide, oxide and salts or complexes of the corrosion inhibitor anions.
The weight loss measurement results indicated that introduction of NH, VL and TS obviously
minimize the weight loss and abridged aluminium dissolution in seawater. The weight loss in
inhibited systems decreased with increasing concentration of inhibitors, suggesting that the
inhibiting effect of Al-Mg-Si alloy in seawater is concentration dependent. Similar observations
are found for 200, 400, 600 and 800 ppm of inhibitors concentration. Therefore these inhibitors
can be considered as efficient inhibitors of Al-Mg-Si alloy in seawater.

Natural products like natural honey, vanillin, tapioca starch are good inhibitor for
corrosion. They can limit the aluminum dissolution in seawater. The inhibition increases with the
increase in corrosion inhibitor concentration.

Strongness and Weakness :

This journal is very good, all parts of this journal are related each other. Beside that the
discussion part is explained well. But in my opinion, little weakness of this journal is doesn`t
attach the formula ( gravimetric measurement ) to measure the weight loss of specimen.
