CURRICULUM FOR THE

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE MAJOR IN PHYSICS


(BS PHYSICS)

I. Objectives:

A. The program is offered with the following objectives:

1. to produce highly competent graduates with solid and rigorous training in basic,
applied and advance physics, capable of instructing physics courses at
tertiary level;

2. to provide an effective learning environment for students thereby equipping


them to be responsive to the needs of physics education and research and
development of the country;

3. to provide a pool of graduates able to pursue advanced physics research,


graduate studies and employment in physics – related jobs in business, industry
or the government.

B. Competency Standards.
Graduates of BS Physics program must be able to:

1. Apply mathematical , computational and experimental methods in solving


physical problems;

2. Synthesize and effectively communicate scientific information; and

3. Apply scientific reasoning to arrive a decisions.

II. Other Components:

a. Admission Requirements:
1. Pass the MSU System Admission and Scholarship Examination (SASE).
2. Must be a high school graduate.
3. Possess good morale character.
4. Submission of certified true copy of Form 137.

b. Retention Policies: (if any)


A student enrolled in Bachelor of Science Major in Physics (BS Physics) Program
must obtain an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.50 or better after each
semester and for all courses taken. A student who fails to satisfy this requirement may
be put on probation in the following semester upon recommendation of the department.

c. Fees and other Payments: (if any)


Fees for the Bachelor of Science Major in Physics will be based on the prevailing
rate and policies of the Institute.

d. Others
The general policies for admission and retention should be followed. (New Policies
must be subject to a thorough study).

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Phys 11 INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS I

This is a course that focuses on the discussion of force, Newton’s Laws of


Motion, work and energy, momentum, gravitation, rotation, Hooke’s law, hydrostatics,
hydrodynamics, heat and the laws of thermodynamics.

Credit : 3 units (3 hrs lec.)

Phys 11.1 INTRODUCTORY LABORATORY PHYSICS I

magnetic properties of matter, alternating currents, electromagnetic waves, special relativity
(photoelectric effect, x-ray and Bohr’s theory)

Phys 101 CLASSICAL MECAHNICS FOR TEACHERS

This is a one semester course focusing on a calculus treatment of classical


mechanics covering introductory vector analysis, forces, potential energy, gravitation, central
forces and planetary motion and the dynamics of rigid bodies. This course is intended for
students pursuing the degree of Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Physics.

Phys 102 CLASSICAL ELECTROMAGNETISM FOR TEACHERS

This is a one semester course focusing on a calculus treatment of classical


electromagnetism using vector analysis and partial differential equations. Topics include the
concepts of electrostatics, electric fields and potentials, dielectrics, Laplace’s equation,
magnetic materials, Ampere’s law, Faraday’s law of induction and Maxwell’s equations. This
course is intended to B.S.E. Physics.

Phys 103 HEAT, THERMODYNAMICS AND OPTICS FOR TEACHERS

This is a one semester course focusing on a calculus treatment of heat and


temperature, laws of thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gases, Maxwellian molecular velocity
distribution, entropy, waves, geometrical and physical optics, lenses and optical instruments.
This course is intended to B.S.E Physics.
Credit : 3 units (3 hrs lec.)

Phys 104 MODERN PHYSICS FOR TEACHERS

This is a one semester course focusing on the introduction of modern physics. The
topics include special relativity, Lorentz transformation, photoelectric effect, early atomic
theories, Planck’s radiation law, Rutherford’s atom, de Broglie hypothesis and its consequence,
Bohr atom and wave properties of matter

Phys 105 PHYSICS FOR SECONDARY TEACHERS I

This is a one semester course intended for secondary school teachers majoring in
Physics. It includes lectures on teaching relationship with emphasis on Physics teaching,
laboratory activities, improvising laboratory equipment, utilizing locally available materials,
formulation of different types of examination in mechanics and heat.

Phys 106 PHYSICS FOR SECONDARY TEACHERS II

This course is a continuation of Phys 105 with emphasis on the areas of electricity
and magnetism, waves, sounds and light

Phys 117 ADVANCED LABORATORY I

This course focuses on instrumentation and selected experiments in electronics


and modern physics. Activities includes shop practice, laboratory techniques and data analysis

Phys 118 ADVANCED LABORATORY II

This course is a continuation of Phys 117 with emphasis on higher laboratory


techniques in modern physics, on instrumentation and data analysis not covered in Phys 117.

Phys 121 THEORETICAL MECHANICS I

This is a one semester course focusing on Newtonian mechanics of particles and


systems of particles, vector analysis, conservation of energy, conservatives forces, central force,
gravitation, special relativity and the covariant formulation.

Phys 122 THEORETICAL MECHANICS II

This is a one semester course focusing on Lagrangian-Hamiltonian dynamics of


rigid bodies, rotating coordinate system, small oscillations, Hamilton Jacobi theory and
continuum mechanics.

Phys 131 ELECTROMAGNETISM I

This is a one semester course focusing on rigorous treatment of classical


electromagnetism using vector analysis and partial differential equations; electric fields and
potentials, solutions of Laplace’s and Poisson’s equations, dielectric materials, magnetostatics,
magnetic materials and circuit analysis.

difficulties, De Broglie hypothesis and its consequences, wave mechanics and the Schroedinger
equation and its application to one- dimensional systems.

This course is a selected subset of the topics of the very broad condensed physics field.
