We don’t teach it because we don’t feel like an expert. We have fallen into that a couple of
times…several times, because, we feel like if we are going to present something to teachers
we really should be an expert at it before we show it to teachers. That’s a mistake. We’ve
come to learn that you need to know enough to get started and to know the value of it and
to understand how it connects with what’s going on in the classroom. But from that point
on you just do it. You jump in with both feet. You really want to push to students and
teachers about being lifelong learners and so I think it is OK to admit you don’t know it all.
It’s OK to have the kids be the expert and you work together to figure out all the nuances of
whatever software package you are using, whatever application, whatever tool you are
using, you work together to figure out how that can best work for you. I think that’s worked
well when we have presented with teachers as well, just to say, this is how much we know,
this is really cool, oh you have that question, why don’t you work and see if you can figure it
out or let’s figure it out together.

What’s fascinating is often times the solutions which maybe, let’s call 1 to 10 things are
foundational to every business. Every business has a book keeping needing and a marketing
need and a sales funnel need and a managing people need and all these…the fundamentals
underneath are all the basic framework but how you get into determining which one is the
priority is I think a bit of art and challenge. So, to answer your question, for me, I try to
avoid the cookie cutter approach and I quite enjoy it frankly. But, I really like to understand
their business and what they are doing and the very first piece of that is understanding their
goals and focus and their purpose. Often times you find that if they haven’t defined that,
just by spending a little time defining what they want to do and what their real focus is, that
is a really good filter to start running through these challenges or issues they have. So, again
that splits into two – they either know these things that they have challenges with –
marketing or managing people and a lot of times they will say I don’t know what’s going on.
I am making the same amount of money I made the last year, the year before. Seems like I
am working hard and I am not making any progress and that’s a very different approach.

So, why are you exposing little Ms Charlie to a second language now, you said she is 20
months old. Tell us a little bit about that decision.

I mean, a part of it was that my husband and I both felt really strongly about the fact that
we wanted her to be exposed from an early age. We both remember taking both Spanish
and German in high school and are frustrated by the fact that we didn’t retain as much of
that as we would have liked. We definitely can both go on a vacation and perhaps look
through a menu and do some conversation; but, it was really important to us that Charlie
got language learning not just in English but in secondary language from the beginning, We
felt the way children are able to grasp language is really fascinating and then we also have
the really wonderful experience of having a nanny who speaks Spanish – it’s her first
language and we were really interested in teaching her Spanish and we had some wonderful
discussions with her about how that would look. We wanted to make sure that Charlie was
learning. So, primarily it was a focus of <name> and I but then also having a nanny that is in
home with her everyday speaking Spanish kind of helped aid that decision.

My slant on climate change and the drive for my research is really trying to understand the
role of these intricate little bugs. So, if you were to look at the surface sea water from the
ocean under a microscope these are really about the width of hair on your human head. So
they are micron sized bugs which are flourishing in the ocean today. So if you really looked
under the microscope you will see millions of these cells and they create these intricate
shells made up of calcium carbonate and great accumulations of these bugs lead to buildup
of rocks which we see even today. The white cliffs of <name> are made up of millions and
millions of these bugs that were flourishing on the surface of the planet 60 million years ago
and they still continue to flourish…and these creatures are called <name> and they really
are the plants of the ocean. These are the rainforest of the ocean. So, they are
photosynthesizing in the same way that your trees and grasses are in your back garden and
they are taking carbon from the atmosphere into their cellular material and when they die
they drop to the bottom of the ocean and take that carbon with them and so they are really
intricate player in the terms of controlling atmospheric carbon dioxide. And this is really my
thread to understand how these bugs have changed their productivity in the past and led to
natural changes in carbon dioxide.
