What is the procedure for designing a

multistorey building manually?

I will give general guidelines for analysis & design of Multistorey RC buildings as per
Indian Codes.

Procedure can be broadly categorized into 4 parts:

Part A: Geometry of the building

Part B: Loads & load combinations
Part C: Analysis
Part D: Design & Detailing

Analysis & Design will be carried out from Top to Bottom. It starts with Slab then
Beam then Column and finally Footing.

Part A: Overall dimensions of the building will be fixed. Plan of each floor should be
developed which helps in locating beam and column positions. Arrive at initial
member properties. Depth of the members can be obtained based on span to depth
ratio given in Clause 23.2 of IS 456-2000.

Part B: Loads which are expected to act on the structure should be carefully
estimated. Following codes helps in arriving primary loads.

IS 875-1987 (Part 1) Dead loads

IS 875-1987 (Part 2) Live loads

IS 875-1987 (Part 3) Wind loads

IS 1893-2005 (Part 1) Earthquake loads

To calculate Earthquake loads, seismic coefficient method or response spectrum

method can be used.

Based on above loads, load combinations shall be generated for both limit state of
strength and limit state of serviceability cases. Load combinations are given Table 18
of IS 456-2000.

Part C: Once loads and load combinations are ready, Structure is ready to analyze.
This is bit tedious task as analysis will be carried out for various statically
indeterminate members.

Methods can be categorized into two groups.

For Vertical loads – Force methods, Slope Deflection Method & Moment Distribution
Method

For Horizontal loads – Portal method & Cantilever method

Members shall be checked for serviceability conditions like Deflection, Crack Width.

Part D: When a member is safe in serviceability, design can be carried out for factored
loads. Use of SP 16 charts will be of great use. Once design is ready and satisfies the
requirements of codes, detailing should be carried out as per SP 34 & IS 13920.

Once you understand calculations in analysis and design, prepare simple

spreadsheets which helps in reducing time required for calculation and avoids
mistakes in calculation.
