I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

A. OTHER COMMON NAME: sambac, sampagung, campopot, lumabi, kulatai, pongso, malur and
manul.

The name Sampaguita is a Spanish term that comes from the Philippino words "sumpa kita," which
mean 'I promise you.'

E. HABITAT:

It belongs to the olive family Oleaceae. Despite the English common name of "Arabian jasmine",
Jasminum sambac is not originally native to Arabia. The habits of Jasminum sambac support a
native habitat of humid tropical climates and not the arid climates

- Commonly cultivated throughout the Philippines for ornamental purposes.

The sampaguita plantation is located at Barangay Langgam, City of San Pedro, Laguna. The largest
barangay in the upper villages.

A. MORPHOLOGY

Sampaguita flowers bloom either singly or as bundles of blossoms at the top of the
branches.

III. STORIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE PLANT

SUMPA KITA

Bilang pambansang bulaklak, ang sampaguita ay sinasabing nanggaling sa mga salitang “sumpa kita”,
na ang ibig sabihin ay “I promise you” sa Ingles. Kung ngayon ay pamilyar ito bilang mga garland na
sinasabit sa mga santo nino at iba pang mga relihiyosong imahen, dati raw ay ang garland na ito ay
binibigay sa isang kasintahan bilang pledge ng tunay na pag-ibig.

IV. SIGNIFICANCE

Sampaguita was considered as a source of income among residence of San Pedro especially during
the American occupation. Because of the large amount of harvested sampaguita the place was
named as the “Land of Sampaguita in Laguna and not a long time ago it was called the Sampaguita
Capital of the Philippines.

V. CONSERVATION

A. STATUS: (Indicate if the plant is critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, other threatened
species)

There were lesser number of individuals from San Pedro who is still growing their own sampaguita.
Most of the sampaguita that is use in making the garland were from neighboring provinces such as
Pampanga and Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

B. CONSTRAINTS/THREATS/ISSUES:

Conversion of land to subdivision and other housing program through private developers.

C. CONSERVATION MEASURES: (Describe the conservation measures taken at the level of the
community, provincial and/or national)

The celebration of Sampaguita Festival to give awareness on the importance of planting and as a
source of livelihood of sampaguita in the municipality of San Pedro. There were also coordination
with Department of Agriculture about the financing of local farmers for planting sampaguita.
