BAB I

PRELIMINARY

A. BACKGORUND
English is an international language whose existence has now become an
important necessity for residents in almost the entire world. In Indonesia alone
English is used as an introduction to learning and is a compulsory subject at every
level of education. In the present time English is very important to learn, for
example when we apply for a job, not only are our skills questionable but also our
intelligence in English.
In learning English, we are required to master 4 language skills, including:
listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills, and writing skills. The four skills
above are related to each other. When we learn reading skills, we will also learn
listening and speaking skills. Likewise when we learn speaking skills, we will
learn listening, writing and reading skills.

B. THE PURPOSE
The purpose of this mini research was to find out how interested UNIMED
students were in English language lessons in their respective faculties and also to
find out how students' abilities were UNIMED to the 4 skills in English.

C. THE BENEFITS
The benefit of this mini research is that we know how far students of
UNIMED understand about English and also to provide readers with knowledge
of English through the theoretical foundations in this mini research.

BAB II
THEORITICAL BASIS

English is one of the most widely studied and used international languages
in communication between nations. This is in accordance with the role of English
as a global language as stated by Crystal (2003: 3) that English acts as a global or
world language because English is learned and used as a means of communicating
in various countries both as first languages, second languages, and as languages
foreigners. In Indonesia, English as the first foreign language is studied as a
compulsory subject from junior high school to tertiary education. By having the
ability to speak English, we can easily access and obtain information because
most of the information is written in English. This happens because English
functions as a language of science, technology and trade. Language skills consist
of four aspects, namely listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills (reading
skills), and writing skills. Each skill is very related to one another. Trying to get
good and correct language skills, someone knows the language from listening.
Then talk and practice reading.
English is a very important subject to learn, in the world of education that
continues to evolve, demanding that every individual who is in the circle of
globalization of education to participate in learning English. Benefits of English
have a wide scope both in terms of education, technology, the world of work, even
as a medium for socializing and establishing inter-continental cooperation. In the
world of education, the higher the level of education, the more English is needed.
If at the primary and secondary level students are not too required to master
English, but at the college / university level students are required to be able to use
English in a number of subjects.

The Importance of Learning English in The Era Of Globalization and Also

In The Future
The times and the increasing number of foreign companies in Indonesia,
inevitably forced prospective job seekers to be able to speak English fluently.
Because most companies are looking for employees who are able to follow the

2
rhythm and communication with clients who are non-Indonesian. It is not wrong
if the selection is tight when the interview is applied by several well-known
companies. They certainly don't want to accept prospective employees who are
not competent and fluent in mastering a foreign language. In the world of work,
we are offered a variety of jobs. However, there is one requirement that is almost
an obligation in all job openings. Namely speaking good and correct English. In
the end, English became a scourge for prospective workers in finding job
openings. English is considered a science that only complicates, even inhibits the
search for work. English is a common language or can be said as a world language
that is indeed mandatory to be mastered in the world of work. Jobs offered to
people who master English are sometimes more interesting and more beneficial.
English has become a universal language used in the world of technology,
education, politics, commerce, and so on. Language is the most crucial
communication tool. Where likes or dislikes, currently English has greatly
dominated all aspects of communication. We can see almost all electronic devices
using English. Most countries in Asia also use English as a 'Medium of
Instruction' or make English a second language after their national language.
In this modern world full of challenges and super tight competition,
everyone is advised not only to have a high level of education, but also required
special skills that we commonly call 'skills'. One of the most needed skills now is
English. In accordance with the explanation above, English is a global language,
so for those who want to be one step ahead of people in general, it is necessary to
even have to master English.

BAB IV
RESULTS FROM RESEARCH

Based on the results of the questionnaire survey that we conducted and

distributed in each faculty at Medan State University, approximately 5
questionnaires for each faculty and the results of these questionnaires have been
calculated using an application to calculate the survey results. So it can be seen
that there are only 12 of our valid questions, the rest are invalid.
And also from these results that in each faculty have different interests in
English. As in the Faculty of Sports Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering, they
have lower interest in learning English compared to other faculties such as the
Language and Arts Faculty, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of
Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Economics, and the Faculty of
Education. Whereas in other faculties besides the Faculty of Sports Sciences and
the Faculty of Engineering, they have a higher interest in and interest in learning
English. They like and are even interested in learning English.
For some students consider English language lessons are very difficult to
learn so many are not interested in learning English. They will only learn English
when the lessons take place in their respective faculties. We also researched 4
skills in English language UNIMED students in all faculties. The results of the
research on 4 English language skills are:
1. Reading Skill
Unimed students can read English texts, but some of them may not
necessarily understand the meaning of the text they are reading.
2. Writing Skill
Unimed students can write English text by looking at the text, but if they
write the text that is played, some of them can write it back and some of
them can not rewrite it.
3. Listening Skill
If they listen to text in English, there are some who can understand what is
said but there are also those who cannot understand because the

5
pronunciation that is played sometimes sounds clear and sometimes sounds
unclear.
4. Talking Skill
Some students can speak English fluently and some students can speak
English even though it is not fluent, because the pronunciation is a little
difficult if spoken

BAB V
CLOSING
A. CONCLUSION
English lessons have been around since we entered elementary school.
Even though we have learned it since elementary school, still some of us cannot
understand English lessons well. Learning English is of course very important for
our present and future lives.
Some people consider learning English very difficult to understand so they
don't like the lesson. According to them this lesson was difficult because in order
to understand what was meant by the discussion, they had to translate the
discussion using the Indonesian-English Dictionary.
Basic English lessons are not difficult to learn if we really intend to learn
and understand the lesson. We must like the lesson so that we can follow and also
understand the lesson easily.

B. SUGGESTION
Along with the development of the existing era, we should be able to
master a little English because in present day English is very important and very
useful for our lives in the future. The way to learn is to take English language
lessons or learn English in our own way, such as often reading English-language
books, watching English-language films, listening to English-language songs, etc.
