Polyethylene

Short cut is PE. Made by Polymerisation of Ethene [CH2 = CH2] to a semi

crystalline, thermo-plastic. It belongs to the group of Polyolefin’s.

Some historical information

Polyethylene was discovered in 1898 by the chemist Hans von Pechmann and on
the 27th of March in 1933 for the first time by Reginald and Eric Fawcett in the ICI-
Laboratories in England. First Industrial production was under pressure of
approx. 1400 bar and a temperature of 170˚C. It was formed as a white, waxy layer
on the inside wall of the autoclaves.
Many years later, in 1940 an economically and profitable production procedure
could be developed. In 1953 the German Karl Ziegler and the Italian Giulio Natta
developed the Ziegler-Natta-Catalyser. This improved equipment allowed the
polymerisation of Ethene under normal pressure condition.
Both scientists received the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1963.

Ultra High Molecular Polyethylene (UHMW-PE)

What makes Ultra High Molecular Polyethylene

such a special and beneficial material?

Quite simple!

The combination of excellent properties!

• Excellent wear-resistance
• Phenomenal impact strength
• High alternating flexural stress resistance
• Anti-adhesion and self lubrication characteristic
• Excellent chemical resistance
• Very good sliding performance (low frictional coefficient)
• Excellent mechanical characteristics

Processing of UHMW-PE for lined discs

Due to the very high melt viscosity of UHMW-PE, the process can not be done with
the conventional method like screw extrusion or feeder casting. The applied
procedure is compression sintering of UHMW-PE powder in a hydraulic press.
To achieve an optimum of combination for tensile strength, abrasion resistance
and impact strength, the process has to run under controlled terms with a core
temperature of 190° up to 200°C and a pressure of 7 0 bar up to 100 bar.

After compression sintering, the cooled UHMW-PE can be

excellent machined at ambient temperatures
