S# TERMS DEFINITION / MEANINGS


1 Sowing To scatter (seed) over the ground for growing.
2 Ploughing A farm implement consisting of a heavy blade at the end of a beam,
usually hitched to a draft team or motor vehicle and used for
breaking up soil and cutting furrows in preparation for sowing.
3 Weeding Weeding refers to the process of removing weeds from the garden.
Defined as any undesired or unwanted plant the gardener does not
cultivate, what one gardener calls a weed, another may cultivate for
ornamental or culinary purposes.
4 Threshing To beat the stems and husks of (grain or cereal plants) with a
machine or flail to separate the grains or seeds from the straw.
5 Harvesting The act or process of gathering a crop.
6 Subsistence Farming It is done on small scale with tradition methods and farmers grow
the crops for their own family members.
7 C ash Crop Farming It is done on large scale with modern methods and equipments and
it is done only for profit.
8 Arable Farming Concerned with the production of crops. (Arable farming or, the
cultivation of field crops
9 Dairy Farming Concerned with the rearing of cattle for their milk and other dairy
products.
10 Livestock Farming Concerned with the rearing of cattle for their milk , meat, skin,
(Pastoral Farming) manure, wool etc.
11 Cooperative Farming A system in which a number of farmers cooperate in the purchase
of seeds, fertilizers, etc. and also share in the sale of their products.
12 Crop Rotation When on the same land different crops are grown but not the one
specific crop.
13 Perennial Crops A crop that is grown through out the year e.g. Sugarcane, Tobacco.
14 Food Or Staple Crop The crop, which is grown for the eating / consumption purpose. A
staple food is a food that is "eaten regularly and in such quantities as
to constitute the dominant part of the diet and supply a major
proportion of energy and nutrient needs."
15 Grain Crop Crops, which contain grains e.g. Wheat, Rice, and Millet…..
16 Fodder Crop A crop, which is grown for feeding on animals only.
17 Mixed Farm A farm where both crops are grown and animals kept.
18 HYV’s High Yielding Variety Seeds, which are, research seeds to give good
crop production.
19 Control Price The price at which the government purchases the crops from the
farmers to sale.
20 Ratoon Crop A crop which can be harvested more than one time.
21 Sizes of Farms Small (2-3.6 Hectares), Medium (12 Hectares) and large farm (120
Hectares)
