The BED LANCES system consists of ten nos. of lances located five in front pant leg
and five in rear pant leg of the combustor, at the elevation just above the nozzle grate in the
combustor. These LANCES are capable of burning HFO with steam atomization as fuel.
Lances are used to increase the combustor temperature during the cold or hot start up
beyond 595 C up to lignite ignition temperature (>680 C).
Required no of lances can be put in service, and it is recommended to select the lances one
by one and also in opposite sides. Lances 6, 8, 10 are located in front side and lance no. 7, 9
are located at rear side of the rear pant leg.
Lances can be operated during load conditions also, if necessary, to maintain the combustor
temperature if requirement arises.
This Lances HFO system consists essentially of the following equipments / system.

3.2.1 Permissive
3.2.2 Sequence
Following actions will occur automatically, when STOP command given for a
selected BED LANCE or TRIP occurs.
3.3 Protection
ALL BED LANCES will trip and trip indication / signal will be ON, when any one of the
following condition occurs.
3.4 Note
1. Similar operations are applicable for other bed lances with respective
accessories and its tag no. as per the selected bed lances. For the tag no of the
selected lances, wherever no. 91 meant for bed lance-6 to be changed as
92,93,94& 95 for bed lances 7,8,9 & 10 respectively.
2. If combustor temp. > 593 deg C, Hot start up can be done without SUB in
service.
3. Any of the BED LANCES can be started independently irrespective of SUB –
I / II/III/IV is in operation or not.
4. The Start cycle should be completed within 120 sec i.e., from Start PB pressed
to opening of BTV of selected Bed Lances.
5. Bed Lances start and stop sequence actions shall be done as per the
indicated order of sequence and also confirming the completion of previous
action through feedback.
