Definition of SCADA System

There is no standard definition but some examples are as under

• SCADA system collects data from various sensors at factory, plant or in other remote
locations and then sends this data to a central computing machine which then
manages, controls & analyse the data.

• SCADA is a system operating with coded signals over communication channels so as to

provide control of remote
SCADA equipment
System (using typically
is Operation one communication channel per
Technology
remote station). The control system may be combined with a data acquisition system
by adding the use of coded signals over communication channels to acquire
information about the status of the remote equipment for display or for recording
functions.

SCADA system is a type of Industrial Automation & Control System and The
International Society of Automation (ISA) defines (IACS) as “a collection of
personnel, hardware, and software that can affect or influence the safe, secure,
and reliable operation of an industrial process, plant or machine”

Application of SCADA System

Historically SCADA systems manages large-scale processes that can include

multiple sites, and large distances and These processes include industrial,
infrastructure, and facility-based processes, as described below:

• Industrial processes include those of manufacturing, production, power

generation, fabrication, and refining etc.

• Infrastructure processes may be public or private, and include water

treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, oil and gas
pipelines, electrical power transmission and distribution, wind farms, and
large communication systems etc.

• Facility processes occur both in public facilities and private ones, including
buildings, airports, ships, and space stations. They monitor and control
heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC), access, and energy
consumption.
