Post Graduate Programme in Management of Family Owned Construction Business (PGP MFOCB)
INTRODUCTION
Business environment surrounding the
construction business is becoming
increasingly dynamic and complex.
Political, economic, legislation, and
international components of the remote
level business environment continue to
c h a n g e. T h e s e c h a n g e s of f e r
opportunities as well as threats to large
firms managed by professionals as well
as family owned construction firms. A
major chunk of the firms in construction
industry are family owned firms.
Families owning construction business
firms would look forward to enhance
the managerial as well as leadership
abilities of the family members so as to
scan the business environment,
forecast changes and make necessary
suggestions for preparedness, innovate,
expand markets and diversify into new
related business. It was thus necessary
to introduce the post graduate
programme in Management of Family
Owned Construction Business that
will provide focussed inputs in the
aspects of construction business. We
consider family owned businesses as
those businesses which are owned by
the joint families or nuclear families,
public listed companies in which family
has a controlling stake or even
partnership firms.
This programme aims to develop
managerial as well as leadership
capability of members of families that
own construction business so that they
become capable of sensing business
o p p o r t u n i t i e s, a n a l ys i n g r i s ks,
developing project teams, developing
business proposals and negotiating
deals in construction business.
The programme content is a fine blend
of general management, construction
management and project management
courses. It is also a fine blend of
courses and workshops. These courses
are carefully scheduled and spread over
all the trimesters. The student is
required to undertake a live project
during summer training and apply
his/her learning of three trimesters and
complete the same to the satisfaction
of the mentor in his/her family owned
business. Thus the programme is well
directed to fully meet the needs of
families in construction business.
Sessions and workshops are conducted
by NICMAR's full-time faculty as well
as visiting faculty of repute.
All students who successfully
complete the programme are expected
to join their family businesses and
hence no placement assistance will be
provided by NICMAR.

OBJECTIVE
The prime objective of the programme
is to develop managerial as well as
leadership ability of students coming
from families owning construction
business. The programme aims at
imparting skills that make them capable
of anticipating business opportunities,
analysing risks, developing business
proposals, developing project teams
and negotiating deals in construction
business. The programme also seeks to
impart higher order thinking skills to
develop leaders who would steer their
family businesses to create wealth for
all stakeholders of the business.
DURATION AND ORGANISATION
The programme duration is 18 months. It
is organised into 6 trimesters with suitable
breaks. Trimesters I, II, Ill, V and VI are
devoted to classroom learning, acquiring
hands-on experience in computer practice
workshop, managerial skills workshop,
tendering, bidding and contracting
workshop and property development
workshop. Summer training is scheduled
in IV Trimester. Elective courses in the
areas of property development, property
management, urban infrastructure,
Special Economic Zones, ERP and E-
Business Applications, technology,
property valuation, etc., are offered along
with core courses during Trimester VI.
Students can choose the elective courses
as per their areas of interest.
FACULTY
Faculty consists of full-time faculty
members from NICMAR as well as
practising managers from the industry, IITs
and related institutions from India and
abroad. Various experts in management
also teach at the Programmes.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Graduates in any discipline with
minimum 50% aggregate marks and
belonging to a family having
construction business. Students are
required to provide necessary
documents and undertaking as regards
ownership of construction business.
MODE OF SELECTION
Written Test conducted by NICMAR for
full time post graduate programmes at
Pune & Hyderabad. OR valid CAT/XAT/
JMET/ ATMA / GATE / MAT scores, will
be acceptable in lieu of NICMAR Written
Test. Eligible candidates will be called
for Written Test, Group Discussion and
Personal Interview in the month of
January for the batch commencing in
the month of July.

October. After the announcement of the
programme, the programme brochures
and application forms are available on
payment of the prescribed fees. The
payment shall be made by a demand
draft drawn in favour of NICMAR
payable at Pune.
