The City of Tshwane is rolling out its alternative metering system to replace the TUMS smart meter
currently in your home. This replacement follows the Gauteng High Court order setting aside the
roll-out of the smart meter project called Security of Revenue in October 2018.
The new Tshwane meter will allow the City to manage the provision of electricity to its customers.
The use of a prepaid meter enables you as a customer to manage your electricity consumption
and save money.
Our Electricity Division will notify you three days in advance of the scheduled time they will be at
your house to remove the TUMS meter and replace it with a Tshwane meter.
Frequently asked questions
1. How will I know that the meter reading on the new Tshwane meter is correct?
The City is working closely with the previous service provider to ensure that the credit on the
old meter is transferred to the new meter. Furthermore, all meters have been certified and
tested by various quality certification agencies (eg SABS) to confirm the accuracy of the
meters.
2. How will I know when my smart meter has been installed?
On the scheduled day of the replacement you will be informed before the meter is replaced,
and after it has been replaced we will inform you of the completed task.
3. How will I be able to identify the installation team?
The installation team is identifiable by photo identification cards displaying the City of
Tshwane logo and the City of Tshwane call centre number.
If you have any concerns, please call the operational centre at 012 358 8912/20/21 or send
an SMS to MDMS@tshwane.gov.za to verify the installation team.
4. Who bears the cost of the installation?
Consumers will not be required to pay for the replacement of the TUMS meters.
5. Once the new meters are installed, will they be able to measure electricity consumption
immediately?
The meters will be operational immediately after installation.
6. Who is responsible for the maintenance of the Tshwane meters?
The City of Tshwane will be responsible for all required maintenance of the metering system.
