EDUC 540: FIELD EXPERIENCE III
FIELD EXPERIENCE INSTRUCTOR NARRATIVE ASSESSMENT
PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT

Student Teacher: Emily Nussbaum ID#: 10166593 Date: Dec. 14 / 2018

School: Olds Elementary School

NOTE: This is not a letter of reference and will not be distributed by the WERKLUND SCHOOL OF EDUCATION to potential
employers., however potential employers may ask for this assessment from the student directly.

The purpose of this six-week Field experience is to focus on complex dimensions of social and cultural engagement in classroom learning. The
student’s Learning Portfolio and his/her participation in the Field placement should provide evidence of a growing ability to act thoughtfully
in the classroom and within the school community, and a deepening understanding of learners and of the enactment of curriculum and
pedagogical relationships within a whole class context. The Narrative Assessment should address the student teacher’s growth in the emergent
ability to plan for, implement and assess learning. It should also comment on the student teacher’s growth in relation to the Teaching Quality
Standard (Draft, 2016), including the student’s own goal setting reflections throughout the Field experience. The Field instructor’s assessment
should also address the student’s overall participation in both collaborative and cohort learning assignments including D2L and the final
presentation assignment. The following report on the student’s work should be organized in relation to the questions: Where is the work
particularly strong? What could the student do to further his/her professional growth and development? You may also want to consider
the course outcomes as a method of organizing the assessment.

It is with great pleasure that I write in reference to Emily Nussbaum. I would observe
Emily teach lessons in Language Arts and Social studies to a very diverse group of grade 4
students. I was impressed on how quickly Emily gained confidence in her abilities as a teacher.
She easily handled routine classroom management details and readily accepted her role in a
very caring and safe environment.

Emily gained a lot of confidence in developing strong working relationships with staff
and strong relationships with students in her care. She was very approachable and engaged in
the work she applied herself to with the students. I found that her lessons were engaging. She
had a willingness to accept advice on trying a different strategy and would implement almost
immediately and with ease.

Emily has the passion that a teacher needs to take on the challenges that the profession
presents. Her strength is in her reflections of the daily lessons and routines. She is intuitive and
honest.

I am looking forward to the next practicum as I know Emily is. There are more challenges
ahead and I believe she has the willingness to accept them. She is already working on materials
for her next assignment. As with many new teachers the concepts of scaffolding lessons in
order to pace concepts in the classroom is a difficult skill. This is something I know Emily feels
she can improve. We will continue to further develop the many skills she already has as she is
on a very positive road to success in this profession.
